I am on vacation in Kissimmee Florida. I went to a Baptist Church yesterday. They have a beautiful facility and have been without a Senior Pastor for a few months. They are an Elder run church. The Sanctuary (Auditorium in today’s language) seated 500 or so, but the attendance looked about 150-165. This did not include the children who worship in two separate services. There was a good blend of people, but I did notice the “more mature” crowd seemed to be about 25%. They were pretty friendly during Sunday School (Adult Bible Fellowship), but during the transition and the worship I felt very much an outsider. I would give it a 6 on the 10 point “Guest Comfort” scale.

Seeker ChurchLike so many “Traditional” churches, they are trying to find themselves in this hip-hop media run world. An elder announced that they were beginning a three month trial toward what seemed to me a “Seeker” style worship experience. They had a young preacher who had come to Orlando to start a church and it seems that now they are folding his church plant into their traditional church. He is very talented (leading the praise-style songs) and then going right into the sermon. Almost a one man show. He is young and energetic and exactly the kind of person who would appeal to a younger audience. I pray the transition will work well, but there are a lot of Baptist Churches near there. Sometimes older folk like the way they used to worship. They don’t want the music very loud. They don’t want to hear a watered down, practical, relevant discourse on time management or some other ‘seeker’ topic.

My problem is that I still believe in the Power of God’s Word. I believe in the Power of the Gospel. I believe in the Power of the Cross. I hate to think that God’s Word as it is written is irrelevant to this generation. I believe that in trying to appeal to the masses we are in danger of building the “First Church of Simon”.

In Acts 8:9-12 we find a man named Simon who had built quite a following. He presented himself as someone great, doing amazing things that got people’s attention. People declared that ‘This man is the power of God that is called Great”. In reality he was a sham, a flim-flam man, having the appearance of godliness but not knowing the power thereof. Along comes a man named Philip preaching the good news about the Kingdom of God and the Name of Jesus Christ. People believed and were baptized. Even Simon played along to get in on the action. He saw the power of the Gospel, the works of the Real Holy Spirit, and he said in Acts 8:19-20 “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!”

First Church of Simon

I fear that many preachers are spending a great deal of money on fancy multi-media stages and sound systems and extravagant Worship Centers and all they are really trying to do is buy the power of the Holy Spirit. They are building the “First Church of Simon”.

I know most of the arguments. People have to be entertained. People today reject the old-fashioned church. There is so much competition for People’s time. We have to offer a competitive product presented in a way that gets people attention in the media savvy world. I look for people in the year 2021 to not even go to church but have the service streaming over their phones. Offerings are taken by tapping in the amount on your phone and pushing ‘send’. If the church has a physical building, the offering amount is displayed instantaneously on an electronic tote board. Pastors won’t count bodies but will count downloads and RSS feeds.

Does God’s Holy Spirit still have Power to convict men today? Does the Holy Spirit still have the Power to Draw men to Jesus Christ. Is the Gospel still the Power of God for salvation? I know we need to communicate effectively, but isn’t that what the whole issue of Pentecost was about. The Holy Spirit took the message of ignorant fishermen and convicted the hard hearts of stubborn people! The Holy Spirit provided the communication. Peter spoke in the Power of the Holy Spirit! As Bill Gothard said, communication is getting your ideas past the roadblocks of another’s mind. We must be aware of the roadblocks, but we must rely on the Power and Wisdom of God! Paul realized that we don’t rely on the wisdom of men: “that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. “ I Cor 2:5. Preachers need to return to the Power of God in our proclaiming. We dare not go into the pulpit without it. We don’t rely on slick PowerPoint’s, we don’t rely on cute skits and object lessons. We don’t rely on others sermon outlines.

We have hearts that have wrestled with God, and now have power with God and man. Our hearts are on fire with the power of God’s Word, the Power of the Holy Spirit. We are only lumps of mud. We are mudpreachers. The Power Must be of God. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. (2 Cor 4:7)

Paul preached in truthfulness and by the Power of God. “by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; “ (2 Cor 6:7) “For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.” (I Cor 4:20) For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (I Cor 1:18)

Is it any wonder that these verses on the Power of God were written to a young church that was having a problem with the flesh. Their worship, their communion feasts were going the wrong direction, the way of the flesh and what man thought was right. Paul had to set them straight with the Power of the Word of God.

It is time that Preachers get back to what Paul was willing to die for-the Power of God in the Cross of Christ. It’s time we cry out for the Power of the Holy Spirit in our pulpits.

20/20 ran a segment on the happiest people on this planet. Not surprising was that America did not top the list. Happy DaneDenmark had the happiest people, in spite of high taxes. Something about all of them (97%) being similar, and not minding giving taxes when they go to someone like you. Plus they all have excellent health care and there are no major inequities in wages. (Because of taxes a restaurant worker makes as much as a doctor? – I found that one hard to swallow).

I thought the comment about taxes fascinating with the controversy swirling about illegal immigrants. Is that the source of our unhappiness in America-our taxes going to illegal immigrants?

The other country presented as high in happiness was Singapore. What is surprising about Singapore is the harsh treatment of criminals and the rigid enforcement of rules and laws-especially for cleanliness and theft etc. Singapore has become a very orderly and safe society. Therefore the people are happy.

Both of the countries mentioned have incorporated principles found in something God told Isaiah in chapter 61:1-8. In fact, when Jesus began His earthly ministry, he read verses one and two in the synagogue. For Jesus had come to begin His Kingdom reign. His kingdom was rejected as a political one, so it began in peoples hearts. In fact, Jesus told Pilate that His Kingdom is not of this world. But Jesus laid forth the foundational laws of His kingdom in Matthew 5-7. Here in Isaiah 61 we see the foundational principles of God’s HAPPINESS in the future earthly Kingdom:

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion– to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks; foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers; but you shall be called the priests of the LORD; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God; you shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory you shall boast. Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy. For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.(Isa 61:1-8)

In the future Kingdom there shall be everlasting joy. This is because:

    1. There is commonality of purpose-we shall all be called priests of the Lord.
    2. God’s Justice is in place. It is not about what is fair-it is about what is JUST! God’s law will be enforced.
    3. There is recompense for evil and wrong doing. It is not selective (a rich man’s justice). It is UNIVERSAL.
    4. There is universal care-all will be clothed with the garments of praise.

America is struggling under tremendous burdens of inequity and injustice. Our legal system has become a plaything of the wealthy and the privileged. Health care is not JUST (based on righteousness) but controlled by the insurance companies. Our system of education, government aide, government handouts are not according to a consistent JUST (Righteous) plan but is full of inequities and favors available only to the rich and privileged.

The recent downturn in consumer spending is just the push our nation needs to go into recession. Perhaps when the middle class begins to cry out under the onerous load of debt and inequality will there be a revival in our nation whereby God’s Justice and Righteousness is invoked.

I was going to do a wedding at one of the beautiful, stained glass Christian Churches in a major Midwest city. It is a beautiful church that is very popular for weddings. Many of the cities “whose who” attend there. It is a church to be seen at.

The Senior Pastor requested a copy of my talk to the couple. As I always do I give a challenge to the husband and the wife from God’s Word. I commonly use this text from Ephesians:

“giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” (Eph 5:20-28)

Wife in submission

I don’t really push submission because it is such an offensive word to women. I normally stress “finding your fit” which is one mamby pamby way of translating “submission”. I also stress the wife’s influence over her husband, something most women love to hear. That is because they love tobe ’empowered’. I also talk about the husbands responsibility to love his wife, even to the point of dying to what he wants, just like Jesus.

Most people like to hear what I have to say, but the preacher of the ‘Christian’ church didn’t. He called me up and said that they did not talk about submission at his church. I asked him about the passage in Ephesians, and he acknowledged that it existed. However, he said they choose to ignore it in their church.

Well I was shocked.

I thought to myself “his church must be run by women”. Then I got to thinking about Martin Luther, and how he tore the book of James out of his Bible, because it talked about works. Then I thought, isn’t that what I do when I water down a word so the message is not offensive?

I read that Huckabee talked about wives submitting to their husbands. Too bad, he’ll start to fade real fast. We’ll be stuck with Romney before long. He changes all of his stances to whichever way the wind is blowing. He would never get stuck in the mud.

So what is it about submission that is so offensive to people. The main thing is it acknowledges that God is stuck on authority. HIS authority. And we better submit to it or there will be judgment. That’s why Jeremiah got stuck in the mud. The princes did not want any other authority but their own. As long as America and our society refuses to submit to God’s authority, God’s design for our families and society, we will continue to erode in moral character and personal conviction. Marriage will become more of a joke, and the family as early 20th century America experienced will become only a dream. There will be no more “moral backbone” to America.

Jeremiah is not my idol.

In fact, not too many preachers aspire to be like Jeremiah. Too many bad things happened to him. Like the time in chapter 38 that the princes of Judea had had enough of Jeremiah’s ramblings. They cried to the King, “please let this man be put to death, because he is discouraging everyone. He is not helping us, he is hurting us with the things he says”. So the King said “whatever you guys want to do, I won’t stop you”.

Jeremiah in the Mud So these princes threw him into the cistern or well in the middle of the prison court. At the bottom was mud which was probably as deep as three or four feet. It was so deep that Jeremiah became hopelessly stuck. They left him there to die, with no food or water. That was a mud bath no one wants to take.

Some eunuch named Ebed-Melech had pity on Jeremiah and went to King Zedikiah to appeal to his sense of reason. The King repented of his decision and commanded Ebed-Melech to take 30 men with ropes to pull Jeremiah out. After much work, they were able to pull him out, and Jeremiah stayed in the court of the prison.

What do you say when you are stuck in the mud? Did Jeremiah say “I’m Sorry, Get me out?” No, I think he kept on proclaiming God’s Message. In fact, I think his message became even louder because of the acoustics of the well.

So this blog is dedicated to the message of Jeremiah, who declared the message of God no matter where he was. Even when he was stuck in the mud. Here’s to you Jeremiah, the first “Mud Preacher”
