Mothers come in all sizesMother’s come in all shapes, sizes and ages. Some of us had young mothers, some had older mothers. Some of us had petite mom’s some had larger moms. Regardless of the age or size of our Mom’s, I know something all Mom’s have in common. When push comes to shove, when the gates of hell open up, when the world  falls apart, there is nothing stronger than a mother’s love for her children. Sorry Dad’s. You don’t come close.

A mother’s love for her children is one of the strongest forces in this world. I believe it is so strong because it is chiseled directly from the heart of God!

Power of Mothers LoveWhat makes God’s Love so powerful, and what makes a mother’s love so powerful, is a special bond!

A Mother bonds with her child through countless hours, countless feedings. This is her baby, her child. God’s love is so powerful because of His relationship to those He loves. God had a special relationship with His people, the Jews. It was a covenant relationship. It made the Jews special, beloved to Him. His love for them was different than His love for the gentiles because of that Covenant Relationship. Through Jesus Christ, we have a New Covenant Relationship with God. We are born again and become children of God. We enter into a new and special relationship with God. He has a special Love for His children. Just as a Mother has a special love for her own children, so does God have a special love with His children.

The Power of Love is because of the Relationship!

Mom fights off pitbullJust like you don’t pull on superman’s cape, your don’t spit into the wind, you don’t pull the mask off the old lone ranger and you don’t mess around with a Mom and her children.

Fremont, CA (KPIX) – A Fremont, California woman is recovering from severe injuries to her arms after a pit bull terrier attacked her in her own garage, forcing her to stash her baby in a garbage can for protection. Thirty-two-year-old Angela Silva received 50 staples and countless stitches as a result of Tuesday’s attack. Silva says her neighbor’s dog wandered into her open garage and lunged at her and her four-month-old son. After she put the child in a plastic garbage bin, the 80-pound pit bull terrier, “Swisher”, continued pursuing the baby and knocked over the bin as Silva fought the animal off with her arms. Two men across the street eventually came to her aid and chased away the dog.

“My flesh was flying off of my arms,” she says. “I just don’t think that I would have been able to stand up any longer.”

Mighty Pharaoh tried to kill the Jewish babies.

Mom saves Baby MosesThe Jewish Mom’s were so tough they were having the babies one day and out working in the field the next, their babies hidden away. One Mom was bold enough to make a basket of reeds and then waterproof it, and then put her baby Moses in it to float downstream. Mom’s do amazing things because of their love for their children.

Jer 9 23_24I believe that Jeremiah 9:23-24 gives us insight into what makes a mother’s love so powerful. These verses reveal what makes the heart of God happy, what He delights in. He delights when three things are at work on earth, and I believe God uses a Mother’s love to accomplish these three things:

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NASB) Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.

This morning we need to understand these three things that God Delights in, and once we understand these, we can better understand the power of a Mother’s Love. But first, let me ask you a couple of questions that this verse brings up…

What Do You Boast About?

“let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me”

Boast in God and MomYou may be smart, you may have wealth, but God says that doesn’t matter. If you are going to boast in anything, boast in knowing and understanding God. That requires growing relationship with Him. That requires an intimacy with God such that any time you pick up His Word you are immediately overwhelmed with a flash from God!

Like the TV series Chuck, who has the Intersect in his brain. Whenever he sees someone or something that is in the Super Spy data base, he flashes on it and all this information comes to his mind. He always gets overwhelmed for just a bit when he “flashes” on the information.chuck_main

Do you have that kind of relationship with God? Do you boast to your friends that you have such a special relationship?

I know that our world has become so infected with sin that homes and families are fractured and tormented. Not everyone has a wonderful mom who loved them and nurtured them.  Our Mom’s may be flawed in several ways, but there is always something you can boast in about your mom. It may be her cooking, her crafts, her drive, her protection, her prayers, her drive. Dig deep and find something to boast in about your Mom. Boast about her to your children, and even your grandchildren. Honor her. She gave you life.

We honor God because He gave us life. If we are to boast, boast in God, in that you know Him and understand Him.

What Are You Accomplishing With Your Life?

“I am the Lord who exercises (āśâ)”. āśâ actually means “to do”,  “to make”,  “to accomplish.” God is very focused. He is committed to working and accomplishing three things. But let me say this word of advice. God is rather picky about who he works with, who He accomplishes for. He only works these three things on behalf of those He has a relationship with.

Amazing MomMoms are amazing. Most of the time they are like Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter, but should one of their children cry out at night, or get in trouble, out comes the Supermom Cape and suddenly she is Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look, up in the air, it’s a bird, no it’s a plane, no its SUPER MOM!Super Mom Action Figure

  • Diaper Changes: 7,300 by baby’s 2nd birthday
  • Diaper Changing Speed: Moms take 2 minutes, 5 seconds (adds up to 3 40-hour work weeks each year!) , vs. 1 minute, 36 seconds for dads
  • Giving Attention: Preschooler requires mom’s attention once every 4 minutes or 210 times / day
  • Taking Care: Preschooler moms spend 2.7 hrs / day on primary childcare, vs. 1.2 hours for dads
  • Chores: Women average 2.2 hrs / day, vs. 1.3 hrs / day for men
  • Laundry: 88% is done by moms, totaling 330 loads of laundry & 5,300 articles of clothing each year
  • Least Favorite Chore: Vacuuming the stairs
  • Most Kids: Mrs. Vassilyev of Russia gave birth to 69 children between 1725 and 1765
  • Oldest Mom: Rosanna Dalla Corte gave birth to a baby boy when she was 63 years old in Italy in 1994
  • Heaviest Newborn: Signora Carmelina Fedele gave birth to a 22 lb 8 oz boy in Italy in 1955

I know at the end of a busy week, even a busy day, most Mom’s don’t feel too Super, but you are! You accomplish so much! Your influence is incalculable.

Mom’s, know and understand that God is Super Too. There is one Major difference. Most Moms’ will admit that they don’t see themselves as Super. Very few Mom’s have ever potty trained their child on the first try. There were trials and failures. But God does not try and fail. He does not experiment on which food is best, or what reward works when trying to potty train a toddler. He is El Elyon, God Omnipotent who Reigns from on High. He is the God of Accomplishment! He is a God who is intimately and actively involved in your lives, and he will accomplish what He sets out to do. And in accomplishing His will for your life, He is guided by three things in which God Delights! And I suggest, Moms, that you are the hand of God, being used by Him to accomplish these three things….

God is a God of ACCOMPLISHMENT. He Accomplishes hesed, mishpat and sedaqa.

God Delights in Mishpāt (JUSTICE)

God Delights in mishpatJustice is the best word we use to translate mishpat

The basic meaning of this word is “to establish the heavenly norm or pattern on earth.” Normally this concept is applied to society, i.e., the bringing of society into the right order or arrangement. In this sense it is translated “justice.”

But in three passages its meaning is applied to a building. In Exodus 26:30; 1 Kings 6:38; and Ezekiel 42:11 this word is used in reference to the design of the tabernacle, the temple of Solomon, and the future temple prophesied by Ezekiel, respectively. Significantly, in all these passages it refers to the design or arrangement of God’s dwelling place.

The word translated judgment means the establishment of justice

God has a Kingdom in His heart, a kingdom of justice, of order, a kingdom that is at work in heaven and his desire is for it to be so on earth.

The Tabernacle was an earthly type of the Justice that God seeks on the earth.

When His Son came to earth, He did what was necessary to empower this justice on earth. One day He will claim this inheritance and establish God’s Justice on earth. Until that day, we as His children, have an earthly tabernacle in which the Holy Spirit dwells. God can establish His justice in our lives. His Son can reign in our hearts and everywhere our foot trods. Mishpāṭ, as justice, i.e. rightness rooted in God’s character, ought to be an attribute of man in general and of judicial process among them (Psalm 106:37).

Aaron wore the Breastplate of Mishpat. And so should Mothers

breastplate of mishpatThe breastplate worn by the high priest is called a “breastplate of judgment” (Exodus 28:15, 29-30), not from any alleged revelation given by the stones Urim and Thummim but because the breastplate covered Aaron’s heart and “they shall be upon Aaron’s heart when he goeth in before the Lord and Aaron shall bear the judgment (mishpāṭ) of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.”

(Exo 28:30)  And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron’s heart, when he goeth in before the LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.

What Aaron was concerned with before God was Israel’s justification, i.e. judicial sentence (see above) of guiltiness. We need more Mom’s who carry God’s Justice in their heart, and carry their children in prayer before our God who delights in mishpat.

Mom’s Communicate God’s Desire for Mishpat to their Children.

A.Proper Behavior.

Montevious Lewis

Mom Give Public Punishment to Save Son from Life of Crime

A 12 year-old boy who bullied a fellow classmate and stole his iPod will have to cut the grass this summer at his school. That’s the punishment his school doled out. His mother had something else in mind. Believing that her son, Montavious Lewis, needed something more severe to get the message through, Bertreice Dixon decided that an afternoon at a busy intersection spent ringing a bell and wearing a sandwich board bearing his transgressions would be more effective. The get-up also included a plastic hat with the letter “D,” for dumb, a description of his actions, she says. According to Dixon, Montavious was trying to be “tough in front of his friends” and she says she is trying to save him from going “down a road where [he’s] gonna end up in prison or dead.” She insists that it is love that motivates her: “This right here is showing him how much I love him, and hopefully he’ll take it into consideration and don’t do it again.””Kelly Dudzik, Fox16 News, June 1, 2008;

Mom’s have an instinctive idea of the way God want’s His world to be ordered. They have an amazing opportunity to impress their children with our Creator’s Justice. The way He wants to Order our behavior in this world. When you go before Holy God in prayer for your children and grandchildren, you ask God to work His Order His Justice in their Life.

B.Proper Lifestyle

RIGHT IS TAUGHT

In the 1950s a psychologist, Stanton Samenow, and a psychiatrist, Samuel Yochelson, sharing the conventional wisdom that crime is caused by environment, set out to prove their point. They began a 17 year study involving thousands of hours of clinical testing of 250 inmates here in the District of Columbia. To their astonishment, they discovered that the cause of crime cannot be traced to environment, poverty, or oppression. Instead, crime is the result of individuals making, as they put it, wrong moral choices.

In their 1977 work The Criminal Personality, they concluded that the answer to crime is a “conversion of the wrong-doer to a more responsible lifestyle.” In 1987, Harvard professors James Q. Wilson and Richard J. Herrnstein came to similar conclusions in their book Crime and Human Nature. They determined that the cause of crime is a lack of proper moral training among young people during the morally formative years, particularly ages one to six. Christianity Today, August 16, 1993, p. 30.

Mom’s must teach God’s mishpat to them when they are young. Proper behavior is not a byproduct of environment, but the result of conscious choices made because of proper teaching in mishpat.

C.Proper Relationship

Mom’s can stand in the gap for their children to cloth them in robe of righteousness.

robe of righteousnessIn prophetic Vision, God’s Mishpat came to be expressed by the Nature of the Robe worn. Isaiah 61:10 is a good illustration of this.

(Isa 61:10)  I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Only those who are in Right Relationship with God will enjoy God’s Mishpat. There must be a relationship with Him, and that relationship means your life has changed, you wear a Robe of Salvation. God has dealt justly with your Sin through the cross of Christ, You are now clothed with His Justice, New Garments. New Relationship. Born AGAIN!

God Delights in tsedaqa (righteousness)

God delights in tsedaqaWe use Righteousness to translate this word. The difference between mishpat and tsedaqa is that mishpat begins in the external and transforms the internal. God’s justice becomes ingrained in our character. Tsedaqa begins in the internal and transforms the external. The justice of God in our heart becomes righteousness that transforms our lives and our environment. It is inner righteousness righteousness that prevails and causes us to outwardly triump!

  • Translated – Righteousness
  • It Is Right Behavior And Attitudes Based Upon A Right Relationship
  • Because Of Tsedaqa One Is Delivered And Triumphs
  • Conquering Righteousness In Action

“ṣedāqâ implies relationship. A man is righteous when he meets certain claims which another has on him in virtue of relationship”. It is that which “triumphs and prospers” deliverance, salvation or triumph — ṣedāqâ (reaches, relates, rewards– delivers, saves and causes to triumph) The word describes the attitude and actions God had and expected His people to maintain. He is unequivocally righteous;

More than ever Moms, our children need a Right Relationship with God. They need the Righteousness that comes from Jesus Christ, from giving their lives to Him. This world is getting sicker and sicker, and our children are under attack. Can you believe what England is telling parents? Will the US be far behind?

English Government encourages parents to NOT teach right and wrong Sex behavior

Parents should not teach their children the difference between right and wrong when it comes to sexual relationships, according to a new Government advice leaflet. By Lucy Cockcroft Last Updated: 3:29PM GMT 22 Feb 2009

Instead, a light and informal discussion is recommended, where moral values are not touched upon. The purpose of this approach, according to the leaflet, is to encourage openness and honesty. However, critics say that without suitable guidance, children will be left vulnerable when they are faced with making decisions about how to conduct a sexual relationship. The leaflet advises: “Discussing your values with your teenagers will help them to form their own. Remember, though, that trying to convince them of what’s right and wrong may discourage them from being open.” It suggests parents could use the lives of celebrities as a way of introducing the topic and says they should choose informal moments, such as when watching TV, rather than sitting teenagers down for a “big talk”.

Mom’s know that God requires boundaries for our lives. They instinctively teach their children the Law of God.While every Mother loves their child, there are expectations, boundaries that Mom’s expect their children to abide by. A picture of this is in the following illustration:

Rufus Jones lost a son of eleven years who was all the world to him. He wrote many years later about the experience, concluding with this luminous parable of how his own heart was opened to God’s love:

“When my sorrow was at its most acute I was walking along a great city highway, when suddenly I saw a little child come out of a great gate, which swung to and fastened behind her. She wanted to go to her home behind the gate, but it would not open. She pounded in vain with her little fist. She rattled the gate. The she wailed as though her heart would break. The cry brought the mother. She caught the child in her arms and kissed away the tears. ‘Didn’t you know I would come? It’s all right now.’ All of a sudden I saw with my spirit that there was love behind my shut gate.”

Gate will always openA child may rebel and shut them off from a mother’s love. Just as we rebel and shut ourself from God’s love. But Mom’s let their children know that no matter how rebellious they are, Love will always be behind the gate. Mom will always be there to open the gate once the prodigal child comes home. Christ will always be there with arms outstretched. Our children need to know that they are never shut out from God’s Righteousness and Love. Jesus Christ is the one who opens the gate to our lives and allows us free access to our Holy God.

No matter the sin, our children need to grow up knowing that God delights in tsedaqa, and that He actively desires for the Righteousness of Christ to be ours. Mom’s you can teach your children that no matter how dark the road gets, there is a Righteousness that is available to them in Jesus Christ. It is a Righteousness that will deliver them from sin!

God Delights in Hesed (Lovingkindness):

God delights in hesed

  • Translated – Loving-kindness, mercy, steadfast love
  • Active Force – doing, showing, keeping based on loyalty to a relationship
  • Three Integral Components:
    • Strength
    • Steadfastness
    • Love
  • The Active force of God whereby he actively seeks to come to the aid of those whom He has established a relationship. He displays His strength in showing mercy and loving kindness in a steadfast way. His love and mercy never fail because it is impossible for God to be weakened to the point of failure.

It is often used in reference to God’s specific, concrete acts of redemption in fulfillment of His promise. An example appears in Isa. 55:3: “… And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.” There are three elements of God’s hesed. Take one away and His hesed is not complete. God shows hesed in His “strength,” in His “steadfastness,” and in His “love.”

In Hesed we find God’s Strength, Love and Steadfast Loyalty on Active and Continual Display. It is a Mother’s steadfast love for her children that best accomplishes God’s hesed on earth.

God Abounds in Hesed

God abounds in hesedGod’s Hesed (loving-kindness) is offered to His people, who need redemption from sin, enemies, and troubles. A recurrent refrain describing God’s nature is “abounding in ḥesed”

We find a beautiful portrait of God’s Hesed in the relationship of Ruth and Naomi.

naomi and ruth picture hesedIn Ruth 1:16-17, we see Naomi, an Israelite widow, decided to return to Israel after the death of her two sons in the land of Moab. Ruth, her widowed daughter-in-law, planned to go with her, even though Naomi warned her that there could be no expectation of marriage and children, but rather the bleak prospect of poverty. Still Ruth refused to leave Naomi.

Uttering one of the most moving pleas of hesed in the entire Bible, Ruth said, “Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; for wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The L ord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.” With that the two widows went back to Bethlehem.

Ruth’s hesed to Naomi resulted in God’s hesed to her, even though she was a Moabitess.

Boaz, married the young Ruth, and they gave birth to Obed, and Naomi served as the nurse. Referring to the child, the people of Bethlehem told Naomi, “And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him” (Ruth 4:15).

Ruth demonstrated hesed to Naomi and her God. Because of the relationship, she found the hesed of Boaz and God himself. Our Savior, is descended from Obed, the child of Ruth and Boaz. Obed was the grandfather of  David, the great shepherd king of Israel. Ruth is one of only three women named in the genealogy of Christ in Matthew 1.

The extraordinary efforts of mothers and fathers to save their children are unforgettable.

Mom demonstratees hesedBeichuan: The young woman buried beneath debris looked as if she performing an ancient ritual. The palms of her hands were placed flat on the ground and she was bent over. A rescuer cried out to her, but there was no reply. The rescue team was about to move on and look for more survivors, when the team captain returned to have one more look. He found a baby under her body. “A baby is still alive!” he said. The three- or four-month-old old baby was wrapped in a quilt. Uninjured, the baby was sleeping quietly. His sweet, chubby face brought some comfort to those around him at the disaster site. Holding the baby up, a mobile phone was revealed. On the phone’s screen, a text message read: “Dear baby, if you survive, please remember that I love you forever.” The rescuers, hardened by the horrors of the disaster zone, could not help crying.

Baby survives on dead mother’s breast Dujiangyan: Another three-month baby was discovered yesterday still suckling to her dead mother’s breast. When rescuers reached the infant, she breathed heavily while still sucking her dead mother’s nipple, completely unaware of the chaos around. Her soft, pink face was a strong contrast to her mother’s dust-covered breasts. “We lifted the baby very carefully. But as soon as we pulled her away from her mother’s breasts, the baby began to cry,” said Gong Jin, a doctor from Guangzhou who volunteered in Dujiangyan. “It is heartbreaking to imagine how a dying mother still tried to breast-feed her baby.” You can tell from the way the mother was positioned that she tried to protect her baby from being hurt. “Maybe she put her nipple into the baby’s lips at the last minute of her life.”

  • A Mother’s concerns are felt by her children, and those concerns and undying love do make a huge difference in children’s lives because:
  • A Mother’s love can heal a child miraculously when there is no hope medically!
  • A Mother’s love does open a child’s heart so the child is able to see the lower-energy that comes with harmful choices!
  • A Mother’s love sometimes is the only thing that opens a child’s heart so they can see themselves as a young person deserving self-respect.
  • A Mother’s Love “fixes” stuff that NO ONE else can fix!

Mother’s, you are touching your children with the very heart of God. Your love for your children has been chiseled from His very heart.

  • “As a mother, my job is to take care of the possible and trust God with the impossible.”
  • “Every mother is like Moses. She does not enter the promised land. She prepares for a world she will not see.”
  • “A mother . . . fills a place so great that there isn’t an angel in heaven who wouldn’t be glad to give a bushel of diamonds to come down here and take her place.”

Mom’s Love is Powerful

Jerry McauleyIn 1866 an illiterate river thief by the name of Jerry McAuley was converted while serving a term in Sing Sing. Later he established Jerry McAuley ‘s Water Street Mission.

Jerry McAuley’s Mission was just one of those dingy little mission halls such as one often passes in the poorer parts of New York. But read Reverend S. Irenaeus Prince’s account of what happened when the founder of this humble mission died :

I was to conduct the funeral and went early to complete the arrangements. As I turned down from Fifth Avenue through Thirty-Fourth Street, I saw a vast multitude standing in the sunshine, filling the streets and the square in front of the tabernacle. Astonished at the spectacle, and wondering why they did not go in and take seats in the church, I soon found that the house was packed with people so that it was impossible for me to get within the door. Proclamation was made that the clergy who were to officiate were on the outside and a passage was made for them to enter in. What could be more impressive and expressive of the estimate set upon the man and his work ? There is no other Christian worker in the City who would have called out these uncounted thousands in a last tribute of love and honor of his memory. There are many instances of men being instantly healed of the disease of drunkenness in Jerry McAuley’s Mission, and of beastly characters being entirely transformed. From the standpoint of material science there was absolutely no hope for many of these men. From the physiological point of view their bodies were hopelessly impaired, from the psychological point of view their mental capacity had deteriorated to the zero point and their will power had been long destroyed. Yet some of these men, men who had committed all sorts of crimes, who had lived in the lowest phases of drunken degradation for many years, were enabled through the present day outworkings of this Mighty Power to live exemplary lives, to become useful and honored citizens.

Mothers all, give me your undivided attention. Some of the worst characters among the men who were transformed in Jerry McAuley’s Mission did not, from our limited human point of view, deserve to be transformed at all. Some of them went forward to the mercy seat, not for the prayers of the mission workers, as they pretended, but simply in hope of getting a meal or an old pair of shoes. Some of them freely admitted this afterwards. Mr. C. S. Hadley, author of Jerry McAidey’s Water Street Mission, who was converted in the old Water Street Mission and an active worker there for many years, says that these men were converted because they had praying mothers.

The Power of a Mother’s Prayer

Moms Prayers convert lost childrenMr. Hadley says, in effect: ‘*MANY MEN COME IN HERE AND GO AWAY UNTOUCHED. IT IS VERY HARD TO CONVERT A MAN WHO DID NOT HAVE A PRAYING MOTHER.”

This is a very significant statement because, underlying it, we discover an important principle, a silent, invisible, working principle of this Mighty Power. That is, prayer is cumulative. EVERY real prayer IS RECORDED SOMEWHERE EVEN THOUGH AT THE TIME OF ITS UTTERANCE THERE WAS NOTHING TO INDICATE THAT IT HAD ANY EFFECT WHATEVER. Many things besides this statement of Mr. Hadley indicate this.

Mothers, isn’t it wonderful, unbelievable almost, that the prayers of these men’s mothers could not be erased; that all the evil, corroding powers of hell on earth could not destroy these prayers, so eternally were they etched in the invisible scroll of Life which records each answered petition to God?

Mother did everything she could think of for that boy. He was so cute when he was little and she loved him so I All through the day her heart was made glad by her boy’s glad play; she had such a time keeping him dry and warm and fairly clean and out of mischief and out of trouble, but this she did not mind at all. Yes, and she prayed for him too. Father would have thought it all nonsense, so she never said a word to him about it.

Mother didn’t know how to pray very well ; she had a secret fear of God ; then, too, there were the doubts which would creep in. Often she would be so tired at night that she would not try to pray at all. In fact it was only when the boy was sick, or after she had heard a particularly inspiring sermon, that she prayed. Even when she did pray there was often this fear of God in her heart ; but nevertheless, as best she could, she prayed.

When the boy began to go wrong Mother fairly agonized in prayer. Her poor, torn heart was now filled with doubt and fears; yes, and there was her wounded pride, too. Sometimes when she tried to pray she would find herself getting angry at the boy. Still, because it was her instinct, and because she did so love her boy, she continued her anguished petitions.

There were, of course, the times when she felt her soul flooded with peace, when she could pray on and on looking in blind faith to God and pouring out her mother’s loving, selfless heart for her boy. At such times she knew that her prayers were answered. But still the boy kept going from bad to worse. He would do better for a while, but it didn’t last long. Finally he married a splendid girl and spoiled her life too.

Father did all he could for the boy. Time after time he paid up all his debts; twice he started him in business. They sent the boy to the Keeley Institute and to expensive sanitariums. But it seemed that the forces of evil always prevailed. They erased, apparently, all the good there was in the boy. He got so he would make solemn promises to his mother, although knowing full well that he would break them. He did things that covered the family with shame and yet did not appear to care that it hurt Mother. Finally he left town under a cloud and was never heard from again.

Time went on and the boy became a greyheaded, besotted old sinner. The forces of evil had corroded his life until no one would have dreamed that he had had a praying mother. Yes, everything good had been erased from that man’s life — EVERYTHING EXCEPT THOSE ANSWERED PRAYERS OF MOTHER.

Mother had long since passed on to the Great Beyond ; but, etched so deeply into the scroll of his life that all the evil powers of hell on earth could not erase them, there still remained her answered petitions. Thus it was that the boy went into the mission hall that night and sat down with a lot of other drunken loafers. Finally he went forward and knelt at the mercy seat and there, with the selfless, loving prayer of faith being poured out for him by the mission workers, he contacted with God — IN AN INSTANT LIKE A GREAT FLASH OF LIGHTNING, ALL THE MUCK WAS SWEPT OUT OF HIS LIFE AND HE STOOD THERE CLEAN AND STRONG. And it was because mother had prayed.

MOM’s, never is a greater miracle than this is performed, than when your child, your grandchild is born again through Jesus Christ.

Miracles like this are happening all around us, all over the world. There is hope for this world because the miracle working power of Jesus Christ is still happening. The Love of Mom’s is still touching the hearts of their children. The prayers of every Mom are still at work even though they may be departed.

Moms need to prayMom’s take hold of this Mighty Power. Purpose to pray fervently for your children, your grandchildren. Never give up on the Power of Jesus Christ to transform lives.

Continue to seek after God, continue to show His Lovingkindness, His Justice, His Righteousness to those in your care. Your Love is chiseled from the very heart of God, therefore it is the most powerful force on this planet!

You yourself can use this Mighty Power. You can build the foundations of your little ones’ lives; Mother, you have this power and you must use it. It is into your hands, not man’s, that God has placed the destinies of the nations.

FATHER, THOU ART LOVE. THOU ART IN THE INSTINCT WHICH LEADS THE BEASTS OF THE FIELD TO THE PUREST WATER AND TO THE MOST NUTRITIOUS GRASSES. THOU ART IN THE INTELLIGENCE WHICH ENABLES MAN TO USE EACH GOOD THING FOR THE GOOD PURPOSE FOR WHICH IT WAS INTENDED. AND THOU DOST MANIFEST THY LOVING POWER IN THE LIFE OF THIS THY LITTLE ONE. THOU WILT ALWAYS BE HIS GUIDANCE IN SELECTION, WHEREBY HE SHALL TAKE UNTO HIMSELF THAT WHICH IS GOOD.”

Even though the message involves events that happened 3000 years ago, there are lessons for us in our modern 21st Century Christian Walk. Throughout the ages God has always had an inheritance for His Son in view.Psalms 2:8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. bible-all-about-his-inheritance

This Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is all about the inheritance God is seeking to provide for Jesus Christ and for us as well. We share in that inheritance. Christ has done what He needed to do to see that the way is clear for us. But we must do our part. Joshua Is The HOW-TO Book Of Claiming Our Inheritance. Joshua provides the instructions for the battle we must undertake to claim our inheritance.

joshua-is-the-holy-spirit1Joshua himself represents the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God rested upon Joshua because Moses had laid hands on him. That anointing was with the inheritance in view. Why is the Holy Spirit Necessary to Claim Your Inheritance? Because it is not gained by Your Might! As God explains in Deuteronomy 1:38 “Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. Acknowledging his leadership, the people said: “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.” Joshua 1:16.

This Morning Joshua stands before us. He is motioning to us to come forward. “Be Strong and of Good Courage” Joshua represents the Holy Spirit, for only in the Power of the Holy Spirit will you overcome and gain the inheritance Christ has for you. There is an inheritance for the people of God which you can miss or gain. This is a very serious matter. There is nothing more serious in the Word of God.

WHAT IS OUR INHERITANCE?

There are 350 references to inheritance and heritage in the New King James Version. To understand completely our inheritance would take several hours of study. Let me briefly paint a picture for you. The inheritance is the full purpose of our Redemption. moses-and-redemption-of-israelThe Nation of Israel was redeemed when they were brought forth from Egypt. Their redemption was necessary to bring them into their inheritance. Redemption is a far, far greater thing than we have ever imagined. Redemption is only the beginning of salvation. When we speak about salvation we are really thinking of people coming to the Lord. We ask them if they are saved, and many Christians will say: ‘I was saved so many years ago.’ So salvation is just a matter of coming to the Lord Jesus, being saved from our sins and receiving the gift of eternal life. But if you look into the New Testament you will see that there are three tenses of salvation. “We were saved”, which is the past tense; “we are being saved”, and that is the present tense; “we shall be saved”, and that is the future tense.

1 Peter 1:3-9 (KJV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Our Inheritance Involves the Kingdom of God

our-inheritance-is-the-kingdomThe writer of the Letter to the Hebrews calls it the “so great salvation” (2:3). The Lord Jesus said to the first members of the new Israel: “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). He also said that the Kingdom of heaven shall be taken away from the old Israel and given to the new (Matthew 21:43). So the inheritance is the Kingdom! Our Redemption Gives us the Power to become the Sons of God. We have an inheritance that is incorruptible, reserved for us in heaven.

king-jesus-will-reignBut remember, heaven is not in view here. The inheritance of Jesus is the main focus of the Bible. That inheritance involves a Kingdom for the Son of God. Our inheritance involves our reigning with Jesus Christ. He will reign in the Millennium. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:24-25 (NKJV) “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. and after he defeats everyone, He will turn the Kingdom over to His Father.

Our Inheritance is an incorruptible body, it is eternal life, but it also involves reigning with Him, being members of the government of the eternal kingdom; and, more than that, being members of the Royal Family that governs. That Kingdom will be for 1000 years, after which all things will pass away, and a new heaven and earth, with a New Jerusalem descending from heaven. God will then set His throne here on the new earth. There will be a new dwelling place, the New Jerusalem, a city foursquare.new-jerusalem-descending from heaven

New Jerusalem

This new earth will be our inheritance. This new Jerusalem that Jesus has been building will be our inheritance. It is a city 1,380 miles cubed. The walls are 214’ thick.

Rev 21:1-7: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Revelation 21:22-27 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The Nations Will Be in the New Earth

inheritance-is-indescribableThere will still be the nations even in the new heaven and earth. There will still be the Kingdom of God. There will still be people living outside the city. They will still need to be governed. That is our Inheritance. To Reign with Jesus Christ! To Reign with immortal bodies for Eternity! This Inheritance is Indescribable! In the case of the old Israel, Moses had great difficulty in explaining the earthly inheritance. He was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, but he had difficulty in explaining the land into which the people were going. He said that it was “a land flowing with milk and honey… a land of hills and valleys… a land which the Lord thy God careth for; the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year” (Deuteronomy 11:9,11,12), and the Bible tells us that the eyes of the Lord never rest favorably upon anything that displeases Him. Paul tried to explain the inheritance: “Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, and which entered not into the heart of man, whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him” (I Corinthians 2:9).

This inheritance involves God’s People, the Jews, and God’s People, the Church

1. Our Inheritance is Both Present and Future

abrahamHebrews 11:8-10 (NKJV) By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

2. Our Inheritance Must Be Sought

Psalms 37:7-9 (NKJV) Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret–it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 5:5 (NKJV) Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 20:25-28 (NKJV) But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave-– just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

camel-eye-of-a-needle

Matthew 19: 24-30 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?” So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

Matthew 25:31-34 (NKJV) “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:separation-of-sheep-and-goats

Colossians 3:23-25 (NKJV) And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Hebrews 6:11-15 (NKJV) And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

3. Our Inheritance: Varies

Numbers 26:54 (NKJV) To a large tribe you shall give a larger inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a smaller inheritance. Each shall be given its inheritance according to those who were numbered of them.

Blessing of Ephraim against Manasseh. Genesis 48:17-20 (NKJV) Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.” But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ ” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

he-buried-his-talentUnprofitable Servant Matthew 25:28-34 (NKJV) Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

4. Our Inheritance Is Affected By Unbelief.

inheritance-affected-by-unbeliefTHE CHILDREN IN THE WILDERNESS:

Hebrews 3:6-19 (NKJV) but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ” Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, while it is said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Hebrews 4:1-11 (NKJV) Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.” Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

Everyone Must Go Through The Wilderness

we-must-experience-the-wildernessBefore we are ready to claim our inheritance, God wants us to go through the wilderness. He wants us to be overcomers.

  • Moses was in the desert for 40 years before he could lead the children of Israel from Egypt .
  • Jesus spent 40 days in the desert and then was tempted by Satan before He began His ministry. In Luke 3:22, Jesus was baptized and the Bible says “the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him” Then Jesus began His ministry and in Luke 4:1 it says: Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, There he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, and afterwards was tempted directly by the Devil himself. After defeating the temptations, Luke records in verse 14: Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.
  • Paul spent three years in the wilderness desert before he could receive the mystery of the revelation of the church.
  • I have spent time in the wilderness.
  • You will spend time in the wilderness.

In your Christian walk, you will go through the wilderness. It is required if you are to have the power of the Holy Spirit. When Israel left Egypt, they expected to an easy journey into the promised land. They had their eyes on the possession, the land and all that it represented. God had His eye on eternity, and upon what this inheritance represented to Him. God knew a long preparation would be required.

A. The Wilderness Experience Reveals God.

god-is-revealed-in-the-wildernessWe must discover what is in our heart.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms 139:23-24

It is knowing God that allows us to know our own hearts. We look into the mirror of God and he shines the beam of truth upon our hearts, revealing any wicked ways in them. It is not up to us to refine ourselves through introspection or self-discovery. We come into our inheritance not apart from God-that is death, but with God, that is life!

wilderness-is-the-crucible-of-characterB. The Wilderness Experience is a Crucible of Character.

Barren Place Of Dependence.

barren-place-of-dependenceThe wilderness is a dry barren place, where you cannot see anything, or feel anything; where if your only resources were in your senses you are at an utter end. It is a barren place of utter dependence upon God, and there is nothing else to depend upon. God wants us to realize He alone is able to bring us into our inheritance. He says: “I am your inheritance” (Num. 18:20). “The Lord is my portion” (Ps. 119:57). “The Almighty will be thy treasure, and precious silver unto thee” (Job 22:24,25 A.R.V.). In Christ we have all that, “For all things are yours… the world, life and death, or things present or things to come, all are yours and ye are Christ’s and Christ is God’s” (1 Cor. 3:25). God uses the wilderness times in our life to show us that He can be our life, and that we must depend upon Him for everything. This is the very essence of our Inheritance, an utter separation from everything unto God.

Bounded Place Of Separation,

bounded-place-of-separationYou are in an appointed place, separated unto God. There is not to be the slightest imprint of Egypt (the world) in the wilderness. “not a hoof to be left behind” There had to be “three days’ journey into the wilderness” (Ex. 8:27). The Separation allows God to be our Completeness, our Fullness. There is to be nothing else we desire.

Hedged Place Of Imprisonment To God.

hedged-place-of-imprisonmentThere is no getting out of it, you are imprisoned, given wholly to God and for Him, He is to be the sole object of your affection and desires. God shut Israel into the wilderness and there was no way out; Pharaoh saw that, see what he says about it: “Pharaoh will say… they are entangled in the land, the wilderness has shut them in” (Ex. 8:27). The Wilderness Shuts us in. Satan thinks it is a good thing to isolate Christians, to cause wilderness experiences. But God is the one who is actually doing the shutting in.

C. The Wilderness Experience Reveals the Power of God.

wilderness-reveals-power-of-godThat is God’s Way. He imprisons us, making us see ourselves as we are. We are powerless, we are totally dependent, we cannot run away. We must depend upon His Power, or we die. You may be in the midst of fiery trials, impossible circumstances. Night and day you here Satan saying QUIT QUIT. Yet for some reason you know you cannot. Our flesh wants freedom, but God wants to bring us to the place where there is no more strength, no more self-reliance, no more flesh. He is holding you, He is with you in the wilderness. He is showing you His power sometimes moment by moment. You will be freed from the wilderness proclaiming God did it. God held you in the wilderness so that you might learn to depend upon Him. The Lord sovereignly held the children of Israel in the wilderness, while the testing and training was going on, preparing for the inheritance. And He is holding you while He does the same, you are the prisoner of the Lord, hedged in unto His Divine completeness; the Lord is sovereignly holding and getting us through, the credit is not ours, but His, it is all Grace.

D. The Wilderness Experience: Reveals Overcomers

give-me-my-mountainWe Overcome, Simply by our Faith in HIM! Numbers 13:30 (ESV) But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Numbers 14:1 (ESV) Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 7-8: And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

You are either a Winner or a Whiner. A Gainer or a Complainer.

The duration of the wilderness depends upon our maturity in our knowledge of the Lord, until HE becomes and IS our “all in all,” He – HIMSELF. When He has His place we come into our large place, for our coming into a large place is on the ground of our personally knowing in a very real way the Lord – HIMSELF as our all; and conquest depends upon this knowledge of the Lord. God needed people who could overcome to claim the inheritance. The only way to overcome is to not trust in your own strength, but to trust fully in God’s Provision. When you trust in your own strength even a tiny Achan can cause death and destruction in your life. This Dependence, this desire to be an Overcomer is critical to claiming our inheritance.

5. Our Inheritance – We Must Overcome

overcomer-in-jesusSee what Jesus had to say to the seven churches. The Key Word He Used is OVERCOME!

  • Ephesus: To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” ‘ Smyrna: He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”
  • Pergamos: To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”
  • Thyatira: And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations–
  • Sardis: He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
  • Philadelphia: Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.  He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. (Rev 3:12-13)
  • Laodicea: To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who overcomes shall inherit all things (all these things), and I will be his God and he shall be My son. Rev 21:7 This Bible is All about Inheritance. It is a tremendous thing to lose, but it is a tremendous thing to be gained.

6. Our Inheritance – Meant to Be Shared

Paul Acts 26:15-18 (NKJV) So I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’

will-you-be-an-overcomerDo You want a Place in the New Jerusalem? Do You want to be a Pillar in the Temple of God? Do You want to Join Abraham in looking for “the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” Will you respong to the call of Jesus to Overcome? Listen to His Promise: Revelation 3:12-13, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

jesus-i-have-given-now-possessJesus has already won the battle. He has already paved the way to our inheritance. We must simply not be sluggish, but resolve to follow Him in the power of the Holy Spirit to go in and possess the land-our inheritance!

Truly the Study of Joshua begins in the Book of Revelation.

revelation-1_7In Revelation we see the exciting climax and conclusion of what Joshua begins. Rev 1:5-6 gives credit to our Savior who has made us to be a Kingdom and Priests in order to serve his God and Father. In verse 7 it proclaims that He is coming in the clouds and everyone shall see Him. All the peoples of the earth will mourn because of Him. Why will they mourn? They will mourn because that which is precious to them will be taken away. The kings and the rich merchants mourned at the fall of Babylon, because they are no longer rich. Rev 18:14 says “all your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.”

Why do we usually see people crying on the Television News. They have suffered loss. Their home has been destroyed, they have lost a loved one in a shooting or explosion. There has been the loss of something they considered permanent.

revelation-reveals-the-god-warsIn the Book of Revelation we find the God Wars Revealed. There is a War going on for the Inheritance of Jesus Christ.

PROMISE OF AN INHERITANCE

inheritance-promisedRevelations is the book of Restoration of the Inheritance that God promised His Son.

Psalms 2:8 God says “ask of me and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

Not only are the nations and all of the earth his inheritance, but also the heavens for Jesus said in Mt 28:18 “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” There is one more thing that Jesus is heir to and that is His church.

“the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, Ephesians 1:18

The church, the believers in Him, are His inheritance. But the amazing thing is we are not only His inheritance, we are “joint-heirs”; “and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” Romans 8:17 (NKJV)

JOINT-HEIRS

We have a personal stake in this inheritance.

Now what makes us so special that when Jesus told His Father that He wanted the nations, He wanted the ends of the earth, He wanted the heavens, it meant that we get all that too. We get all those riches too. In fact, Jesus cannot claim them without us, the church, the body of believers by His side? Man is the reason that God lost the earth. Man is the reason that the nations rebel against the Christ. Man is the reason there is the prince of the power of the air. In order for Jesus to gain this inheritance, the nations, the earth, the heavens, He had to do something to build His church.

Revelation 4:1 allows us to look inside an open door, a door that opens into heaven. Through that door we see a throne, and someone sitting upon it. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. God’s throne is actively at work. Before the throne is a sea of glass, all of humanity. In Revelation 5 we see the one sitting on the throne holding a scroll. This scroll is written on both sides. Both before and after the Messiah came. It has seven seals. A mighty angel proclaims “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll”

they-sang-a-new-songJohn weeps and weeps, for it seems that no one is worthy. But then John beholds a lamb, look as if it had been slain. The lamb comes and takes the scroll, and then a new song is sung:

“You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals,
because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation.
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”

lamb-that-was_slainThe Lamb that was slain is the one who made the inheritance possible. In dying, to purchase the inheritance, He also purchased men and women for God. He purchased them to be a kingdom and priests to serve God, and to reign with Him on earth. The Lamb is Jesus Christ. He has purchased with His blood a permanent inheritance. That permanent inheritance is this world, the nations, all who will believe, and the heavens around us. It is all His, and because our bodily purchase seals the deal, we are joint-heirs. His victory is not complete until this mortality puts on immortality. We cannot share the inheritance until our total redemption is realized.

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 1 Corinthians 15:22-25 (NIV) I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 1 Corinthians 15:50 (NIV)

Now this world is the Lamb’s, Satan has been rendered powerless, the sting of death is no more to all those who believe by faith. But in the meantime, Christ is building His inheritance. He is building His church. And the Church is working with Him to claim His inheritance.

OPPOSITION TO THE INHERITANCE

vinedressers-oppose-the-masterSatan is vigorously opposed to any inheritance for the Son. He comes to KILL STEAL AND DESTROY as John 10 says. In fact, the parable in Matthew 21:38 bears this out. The wicked husbandmen (vinedressers) had stoned the servants, and seeing the coming of the Son of the landowner said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ Satan doesn’t want Christ receiving any of His inheritance. Satan wants to ROB Christ of His inheritance, and He wants to get Christians to help him do that. He already got Israel to rob God of His inheritance:they-killed-the-son

“Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.” Matthew 21:43-44 (NIV)

Satan stole the inheritance away from the Jews, and now it is up to the Church. We have the God Wars going on, and the church is the army, the church was God’s plan from the beginning to claim the inheritance of His Son. Christ is wanting His inheritance, and He is wanting the church to secure it, and Satan is doing whatever He can to Steal Kill and Destroy the church and any believer who wants to fight to secure the inheritance of the LAMB. It is all about producing fruit, producing an inheritance for the King!

Land Flowing With Milk and HoneyJoshua was to lead the people into a land flowing with milk and honey-fruitful land. The Jews failed to deliver, Satan had his way, so the Kingdom was given to another group, the church, to bear fruit, the fruit of the spirit. It is all about the inheritance. Now this Inheritance has been the Supreme Purpose of God from the very beginning. Redeeming Man was important, but this inheritance for His Son was more important. The redemption was a benfit of achieving the inheritance.

So to you and me, this inheritance must be our main consideration in living the Christian life. Our walk with Christ matters. Every decision, every act of walking in the flesh, every selfish act will affect your inheritance, and if it affects your inheritance, it affects Jesus Christ’s!

OUR PART IN THE INHERITANCE

Let’s look at how God places importance on our inheritance:

  • “…to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18).
  • “…giving thanks unto the Father, who made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light” (Colossians 1:12).
  • “…knowing that from the Lord ye shall receive the recompense of the inheritance” (Colossians 2:24).
  • “And for this cause he is the mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken place of the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance” (Hebrews 9:15).
  • “…unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (I Peter 1:4).
  • “And now I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you the inheritance among all them that are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).

WE MUST JOIN THE BATTLE

we-must-overcome-to-share-in-the-inheritanceThe importance of our Life and our faithfulness to Jesus in securing this inheritance is underscored in Revelation 21:7 but let’s start at verse one:

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. Revelation 21:1-7 (NKJV)

If we are to share in Christ’s Inheritance, we must OVERCOME. We MUST join the Battle.

The Church is Birthed and the Battle is On

churched-is-birthed-and-battle-is-onThe Church has to be brought into that inheritance for which it has been eternally predestined by God; and the Spirit came – in type in Joshua, in reality in Acts – for that one purpose. And this is going to be a conflict which will not end, until the Lamb has overcome in finality.

In the book of the Acts, then, the Holy Spirit does take over in the matter of the inheritance; and He takes over for the conflict of the inheritance. We do not move far into that book before we find the conflict is on. In Jerusalem – whether from Jewish leaders, who kill Stephen; or from the rulers of the pagan world, who kill James and imprison Peter – there it is; the conflict is on. But the mighty Spirit is with the Church in the conflict. He has linked Himself up with that instrument for the great purpose of God. And, when you consider the incidents, and what seem like the tragedies, and look through them, there is a sense in which it can be said, concerning this union of the Holy Spirit with a vessel here on this earth, that ‘no man hath been able to stand before it all the days of its life’ (Josh. 1:5). There is a sense in which that is true. There has been a withstanding from men and from demons, awful withstanding: but the Church has gone on; the testimony has never ceased in the earth. Even when sometimes it seems to have been driven underground, it comes up and goes on again. Acts, then, sees the Holy Spirit coming, uniting Himself with the instrument, the vessel, and the conflict arising.

When you pass over to the Letter to the Hebrews, you find yourself once more in this battle. For here it is all about the inheritance, spiritually. The Spirit is here, urging the Church, urging the believers to go on, to go on; not to go back, not to stand still, but to go on. The writer points out that Joshua did not bring the people into God’s rest (Heb. 4:8). It was type, it was figure, but that final fullness of Christ was never entered into under Joshua. But Jesus, and the Holy Spirit – they are going to bring the Church into the final fullness.

When we come to the book of the Revelation, we find that the whole issue of the inheritance has now resolved itself into a matter of ‘overcomers‘. However we interpret the book of the Revelation – whether as applying to the whole dispensation or to the end of the dispensation – the situation that we find is that the Church as a whole has not gone on.

A very large proportion of the Church has either declined, fallen back or away, or has stood still in this matter. Perhaps the conflict has been too fierce, the cost too great, the world too attractive, sin too subtle; but there it is. As we find at the end of the book of Joshua, that the enemy was not finally cast out (for we have the tragedy of the book of Judges): so, in the last book of the Bible, in the Revelation, we find that the enemy has not been fully and finally worsted. He still has territory amidst the people of God. And so, there arises the whole question of the ‘overcomer’s’. The ‘overcomer’s’ are those who have passed all tests (think the wilderness journey) and will share in the inheritance promised to the Son.

The Inheritance Must Be Secured

inheritance-must-be-securedThis inheritance governs everything in both the Old Testament and in the New Testament; all that is in the Old Testament and in the New Testament is governed by the inheritance. It is the inheritance that justifies and explains redemption. That was true in the redemption of Israel from Egypt, and it is true regarding the redemption of the Church from this world.

All that is governed by the inheritance. Redemption was never just something in itself. The redemption of Israel out of Egypt was a mighty thing, and we have seen that it was a demonstration of the ‘exceeding great’ power of God; yet all that was not just to have Israel out of Egypt.

It was the inheritance that explained the tragedy of Israel, and it was a terrible tragedy! Six hundred thousand men (aged 20 and above) came out of Egypt, but only two went into the inheritance. All the rest of the six hundred thousand men died in the wilderness. The New Testament makes a very great deal of that as a matter of warning to the new Israel, that is, the Church. We must read our New Testament in the light of the inheritance, for that is what governs it in all its aspect. The inheritance is the interpretation and explanation of our very existence. It is the positive factor in our new birth.

What is our Inheritance?

  • “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?” (Rom. 8:32).
  • “Wherefore let no one glory in men. For all things are yours; whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; and ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.” (1 Cor. 3:21-23).

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?” In giving us His Son, He gives us all things; they are ours. The Apostle says, “All things are yours”; they are yours, they belong to you. And yet we find him in this state, caught up in this sense of tremendous prospect and possibility, of the greatness of what is yet for the Lord’s people beyond all his own vast apprehension and attainment; giving him this sense, that, though he had come into such wealth and such fullness, it was nothing compared with what he knew was his in Christ, and which was yet to become his in experience. So we have already secured unto us a great inheritance.

We have inherited with and in Christ; not by earning or by working – it is the inheritance of faith in Christ Jesus and goes far, far beyond anything that we have yet imagined. Ephesians 1-3 but touches on all that we have in Christ. But after Ephesians 1-3 comes 4-6. We must WALK and we must WAR!

There is a huge difference between having an inheritance and enjoying it; having wealth secured unto you as yours, and experiencing all that it can bring and all that it means. “Know ye not that Ramoth-Gilead is ours, and we are still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?” (1 Kings 22:3). The word for still means dormant, or CLUELESS in our modern terminology. The inheritance is ours, it belongs to us, but we are CLUELESS and do not claim it.

So in coming to Jesus Christ and receiving Him as our Savior, we are then part of an inheritance that spans all of creation, all of time. It is an inheritance far beyond our finite mind and limited experience. It is not only meant to be entered into in eternity, but Jesus Christ wants us to claim it for the here and now! If our Christian lives are not characterized by a continuous apprehension of greater fullness’s in Christ, there is something very seriously wrong with us. The inheritance is to be known now.

JOSHUA: THE BATTLE FOR THE INHERITANCE COMPLETE WITH INSTRUCTIONS

joshua-instructs-us-how-to-battleWe have an inheritance to gain in the New Heaven and Earth. We have an inheritance when we reign with Christ during the millennium. What does all this have to do with the Book of Joshua? I’m glad you asked. Joshua is the book of INHERITANCE. It is the book that will reveal to us how to live the Christian Life so that we can overcome, so that we can engage in the God Wars and not be overcome by the wicked One. Joshua is the book in which we learn our lessons on how to engage in the God Wars to claim our inheritance.

The Bible is about bringing the people of God into their full inheritance. The Old Testament was their inheritance in God with the Messiah in view. The New Testament their inheritance in Christ with the Cross in View. The New Testament is concerned with that in a spiritual way. Those are but aspects of this one great truth: that God, from eternity, has had in mind an elect people, to bring into the fullness of His Son, Jesus Christ.

In the first chapter of Joshua we see things are very positive, definite, strong. There is nothing weak here. It is all emphatic and imperative. It is essential that the people come into their inheritance. They must prepare for BATTLE. Make no mistake, we do not drift into God’s Will. The walk in the Spirit is no cake walk. It is achieved by a very conditioned life, a very planned life, a very disciplined life. It takes one who is determined follow God and follow His Will.

Notice, before taking the plunge so to speak, before stepping into the waters, Joshua told the people to wait three days. They had to go home and think about it. Do they really want this inheritance? Do they really want to engage in this Battle that is ahead of them? Do they have hearts for the fight? God is so amazing. He is accomplishing His will with me and you. He doesn’t seek unfaithful, unwilling, scaredy cats to do His will. He wants only those who have considered the cost, who are willing to put everything they have on the line. People with a firm foundation. No Sunday Christians here! NO NO NO! Only those willing to LIVE for God every moment of their lives need apply for this river crossing. The inheritance is not for the double minded, the scaredy cats. No Felix’s are welcome for this crossing.

Preachers are quick to speak of the glory of heaven, the reward of following Jesus, after all His burden is light. But the truth is, there is a battle going on for that which is in God’s Heart-the inheritance for His Son. And God is needing us to secure that inheritance, for we are part and parcel with the inheritance. We MUST purpose to join the battle.

It is time for preachers to declare the whole Gospel, and that is that there is a cost. There must be a deliberate decision to live your life for God’s Purpose.

claiming-our-inheritanceTake time to face the whole thing. Lay a sound foundation, so that you will be able to say, when the difficulties come afterward, and the enemy comes in like a flood: ‘Yes, but I counted the cost! I knew what I was getting into. I am not where I am because of an impulse, an emotional appeal. Mine is a soundly considered position; I know why I am where I am.’ It is very important, before you engage in the Battle for Our Inheritance, that you pause for three days before you make your advance. Now, that need not be taken literally; but it does represent a state of the heart, a facing of things with God, a reckoning of the Cost of Following Him.

Joshua is all about gaining our Inheritance.

  • Leviticus (inheritance 1x) Deals with God’s rights. It is the book of approach and access to God, where God’s rights are recognized. Secured by the cross. (God must have his rights before we can have our inheritance. )
  • Numbers (inheritance 35x) is the book of the ordering of the hosts with the inheritance in view.
  • Deuteronomy (inheritance 18x) is the book of the establishing the basis for possessing the inheritance.
  • Joshua (inheritance 44x)-book of the inheritance

In Leviticus the word “inheritance” occurs but once. Leviticus does not deal with inheritance, but with God’s rights, and how God must have those rights in every aspect of our lives; Our worship, our work, our play, our treatment of others, our marriage, our family, even what we eat. It is the book of God’s place in our lives, His Altar, and the access and approach we must take to get to God. God’s Rights were secured by sacrifice, one which we offer to Him. Now, His rights are Secured by the perfect Sacrifice, and our faith and belief in the power of that Cross.

God must have His rights before we can get our inheritance, as Leviticus teaches. Then when you come to the Book of Joshua you find the whole subject of the inheritance dealt with, and the entering into possession.

What are the Rights of God?

From a quick look at Leviticus we find the following:

  1. God is God Alone. He is Holy Righteous Just
  2. To have a relationship with Him, we must acknowledge His holiness and our Sinfulness
  3. To have a relationship with Him we must be willing to Obey His Law
  4. God’s Law God’s Presence is to touch every aspect of our life-our worship, our work, our play, our relationships, our eating, our drinking, our marriage, our family.
  5. God is not a part time God. He wants all of us.

give-god-his-rightsAnd Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’ ” So Aaron held his peace. Leviticus 10:3

Three days they had time to consider before stepping into the Jordan. Three days they had to think about what they were doing.

God is perfectly content to let you do your thing. He does not force you into a relationship with Him. He does not dictate your love for Him.

God has promised an inheritance to His Son. If you want to share in that inheritance, you must give every part of your heart soul and body to God as your God. This is not a job for undecided, for the faint of heart.

To share in the inheritance, to join the battle, you must first give God His Rights, and lay aside your own.

we-would-see-jesusA little boy was sick on Palm Sunday and stayed home from church with his mother. His father returned from church holding a palm branch. The little boy was curious and asked, “Why do you have that palm branch, dad?” “You see, when Jesus came into town, everyone waved Palm Branches to honor him, so we got Palm Branches today.” The little boy replied, “ Aw Shucks! The one Sunday I miss is the Sunday that Jesus shows up!”

Have you ever though how wonderful it would have been to be there when the throngs of people lined the streets leading to Jerusalem. How marvelous to see Jesus riding through the Eastern Gate and shouting Hosanna to the Highest!

The whole city was a buzz of talk of the Messiah. The hubbub was so great that everyone was wanting to see Jesus.

The Pharisees were so jealous. In John 12:19 they exclaimed, “Look, the whole world has gone after him!”rock-star-jesus2

Jesus had become a Rock Star to use language you might understand. It was as if He had won American Idol. And with fame comes those who are curious. Look with me at John 12:20-36.

Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus. But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would die. The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. John 12:21-36 (NKJV)

A simple request, Sir, we want to see Jesus! Yet John doesn’t record that they were able to see Jesus. In fact he says Jesus went and hid himself. Could it be that Jesus hides Himself from people today? We need to go back to the beginning of Christ’s ministry and see why Jesus reacted this way. Why He said and God said what He did. From the very beginning of His ministry people wanted to see Jesus.

1. People Wanted To See Jesus For What He Could Do…

jesus-casts-out-unclean-spirits1

  • Luke 4:35 Jesus casts out unclean spirits. The report of what He had done went out throughout the region.
  • Luke 5:12 Jesus cleanses a Leper. More reports, Great multitudes. (vs 15)
  • Luke 5:19, A Paralyzed man is lowered through the roof.
  • Luke 6, A man with a withered hand.
  • Jesus heals a whole multitude (Luke 6:19)
  • Luke 7:2 A Centurion seeks Jesus
  • Luke 7:13 Jesus raises the son of a widow woman from the deadjesus-raises-widows-son1
  • Luke 8:4 Great multitudes assembled and Jesus taught
  • Luke 8:41 Jairus wants to see Jesus to get him to heal his daughter. Jairus is a ruler of a local synagogue.
  • hem-of-his-garment2Luke 8:44 A woman with an issue of blood (12 years) touches the hem of the robe of Jesus
  • Luke 8:50, Jesus raises the daughter to life!
  • Luke 9:21 Jesus predicts His death.
  • Luke 9:37 Great multitudes continue to seek Jesus.
  • Luke 9:44 Jesus pleads with them to let His words sink down into their ears. He is about to die!
  • Luke 16:31 Story of a Rich man and a beggar they all knew as Lazarus. “If they do not Hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead.”
  • Luke 18:31 Jesus for the THIRD time predicts his Death but also His resurrection.multitude-praises-jesus1
  • Luke 18:41 WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?
  • Luke 18:42 He gives the blind man his sight
  • Luke 19:3 Zacchaeus wants to see Jesus.
  • Luke 19:28 The crowds reach the tumult, for His triumphant entry.
  • see-jesus-for-selfish-wants

    2. People Wanted To See Jesus For Their Own Selfish Wants

    • Luke 23:8 Herod was glad to see Jesus, for he thought he was a court jester, able to do miracles for entertainment.
      • He was a good luck charm, there for the Kings pleasure.
    • John 11:32 Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
      • They wanted Jesus to do their bidding, to bail them out of a jam, heal their brother. They thought they had a monopoly on Jesus.

People just didn’t understand Jesus. They valued Jesus only as someone who could do something for them. They did not value Jesus for who He is.

Mary and Martha saw Jesus as the Christ of God, able to do mighty miracles because God would respond to His prayers. But Jesus wanted them to see that HE is LIFE. He is the Resurrection. He is God.

Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” John 11:21-27 (NKJV)

BUT THEY DID NOT SEE THAT GOD HIMSELF WAS STANDING BEFORE THEM, THAT JESUS CHRIST WAS THE RESURRECTION AND LIFE. HE IS LIFE.

If you do not see Jesus as He is, you might as well be like the countless multitude who every Christmas gaze upon the manger scene and think how wonderful baby Jesus is. Look how neat he is to be born at Christmas time so we can get all kinds of gifts. You might as well get you a charm or a cross and wear it and tell all your friends how good Jesus is to you and how you love Him so. In the meantime you go around sinning just like the world. Jesus is just a lucky charm that you pull out when you get sick or things aren’t going right at work or home. You only want to see Jesus because He can do something for you. Jesus loves me after all. He forgives me, he loves me just the way I am.

    3. Do You Really Want to See Jesus?

do-you-really-want-to-see-jesusDo you want to see the real Jesus Christ? Do you want to know the Son of God? Do you desire as Paul Prayed in Ephesians…

“that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height– to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” EPH 3:17-19   Christ came that we might be FILLED WITH THE FULLNESS OF GOD!

JESUS REVEALED THREE CONDITIONS THAT MUST BE MET BEFORE YOU CAN REALLY SEE JESUS.

    A. HEAR & OBEY THE WORD OF CHRIST

hear-and-obey-word-of-christ2 IN OUR TEXT: “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world”

    • Three times Jesus told them that He would die and rise again.
    • He told Martha that He was the resurrection and the Life.
    • He told the Rich man that if they did not listen to Moses and the prophets they would not believe even if they witnessed a person raise form the dead.

There is only one thing that can open your eyes to see Jesus. A willingness to OBEY the Word of God.

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:8-10 (NKJV)

Obedience to the Words of Christ will result in a change of heart. That change of heart will result in a heart that desires to obey Him!

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matthew 7:21-23 (NKJV)

But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say? Luke 6:46 (NKJV)

You can say you LOVE Jesus. He can even be like a Rock Star to you. You can get you all teary eyed because He loves you so. But if you do not Listen to His Word, Believe His Word and OBEY it, take it into Your Heart and Life, you do not know the Real Jesus, and worst yet, He does not know you. Why should He reveal Himself to you if you don’t intend to fully obey Him. YOU ARE JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHERS WHO ARE TAKERS AND NOT OBEYERS.

The Greeks wanted to see Jesus, and in answer, a Voice came from Heaven. It was the Voice of Jehovah, El Shaddai, Creator God. It was the Voice to be listened to and obeyed. “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world. Listen to the Voice of God, the Word of God. Obey, for Judgment has come.

    B. FOLLOW JESUS by SERVING HIM

follow-jesus-by-serving-himIn our text: He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also.

Jesus said: He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. MATT 10:37-39

Seeing the real Jesus requires a total surrender of your life, all that you want, all that you have. Anything less and you just want a good luck charm, You want to live your life for your benefit, and not Jesus. Why should He show His true self to someone who doesn’t want to follow Him, who doesn’t want to know Him as THEIR LORD, AS THEIR LIFE? If you love your life, your possessions, your place in this world, you can’t see Jesus. If you want to see the Author of Eternal Life, you must see Him without holding on to anything. Jesus will never show himself to you if you merely want someone to tag along as you live your life.

    C. GLORY IN THE POWER OF THE CROSS

glory-in-the-power-of-the-crossIN OUR TEXT: And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 (NKJV)

Jesus never came to the world to be a Rock Star, the King of newly liberated Jews. Some teach that if only the Jews had accepted Him. No. Jesus came for the cross. He came to be cursed for you and me.

The Cross is the most powerful message Christians have. Christians are nothing without the Cross.

On the Cross Christ experienced the most severe physical pain, the most severe psychological pain, but worse than all that, He experienced Hell for all eternity. He became sin, He became the most disgusting thing in the entire universe. He became you and me. He took our place. “that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.” Hebrews 2:9

He experienced an eternity of Hell for me. He experienced an eternity of Hell for you.

It is curious that people who are filled with horrified indignation whenever a cat kills a sparrow can hear the story of the killing of God told Sunday after Sunday and not experience any shock at all.

Jesus told his disciples, that if these men wanted to see Him, they must see Him on the Cross. “Judgment was now upon the world, and Satan was about to be dealt with. Jesus was about to be lifted up athe covenant sacrifice between God and man, Heaven and earth, Holy God and cursed man.

While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.

The cross is what brought light into the world. To see the Light of the world is not possible without seeing Christ crucified on the cross. But that is not enough. You don’t gaze upon the cross and think of poor Jesus. You don’t think upon the cross and wonder such a waste. What could he have done…

We MUST EXPERIENCE the CROSS of CHRIST

experience-the-cross-of-christThis is where most pretend followers fail. Like Judas, like Demas. Paul tells us we IDENTIFY with the Cross. Paul tells us that the Cross must be central in our life, It must be the core belief in our Walk with Jesus Christ. If we are to See Jesus on a Daily Basis, we must take up the cross DAILY, without complaint, without regret.

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Galatians 6:14 (NKJV)

The cross is what seperates the Christian from being like the world. We die to self we die to what we want. To See Jesus we must serve Him, We must give our lives to the Cross. Paul cried his heart out over supposed Christians who became the enemy of the Cross.enemy-of-the-cross

Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame–who set their mind on earthly things. Philippians 3:17-19 (NKJV)

If you are a “professed” Christian, yet not embracing the cross, not dying to self, living in the world, loving the things of the world, doing shameful things, don’t pretend to be a follower of Christ. In reality you are an enemy of the cross, you are just like those soldiers beating and taunting Jesus. You haven’t seen Jesus on the Cross. The world has not been crucified to you.

All those people wanted Jesus to do something for them. They followed and praised because He was a great prophet who could do such wonderful things for them. He healed, he spoke amazing words. But it is not about what Jesus can do for us.

Jesus is no rock star. He is no American Idol. He does not want us to think about him that way. He will never reveal himself if you have that mind-set.

What he told his disciples many times, what he told the crowds at least three times, if you want to see the Real Jesus, the Son of God Jesus, the Savior Jesus, the Redeemer Jesus, Jesus the Lamb of God, you must look long and hard at the Cross. You must look and see Him upon the Cross, dying for you. You must be willing to die to what you want, you must be willing to follow Him by taking up His Cross.

He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. Matthew 10:37-39 (NKJV)

In saving Private Ryan, we see a group of Army Rangers led by Tom Hanks trying to reach Private Ryan and bring him home. He wants to stay for one last fight, and in the battle, Tom Ryan is mortally wounded.

Private Ryan leans over to him, and Tom Hanks whispers something to him. Private Ryan bent down and Tom Hanks said, “Earn this.”

The truth is, no Army Ranger would ever say “Earn This”. Why? Because the Ranger motto for the past two hundred years has not been “Earn this.” The Ranger motto for the past two hundred years has been Sua sponte, “I chose this.” I volunteered for this.

So, when Private Ryan bent down, if Tom Hanks was really a Ranger he would have said, “Sua sponte, I chose this. This is free. You don’t pay anything for this. I give up my life for you. That’s my job.”

And so when you look at the cross and see Jesus hanging there, what you do not hear is “Earn this.” You never hear Jesus say, “Earn this.” He doesn’t say, “I’ve given everything for you. Now you need to gut it out for me.” What he says is “Sua sponte.” OF MY OWN ACCORD I volunteered for this. You don’t have to pay anything for it.

take-up-your-cross-and-follow-jesusBut Jesus adds something else, that only the Son of God can say. He says, “Follow Me”.

    Because Jesus redeemed you with His life, Because He showed Sin and Satan and Death that His sacrifice was not in vain, for He rose from the dead as we will celebrate next week, He now says to you;

Once you look upon the cross and turn away from your sin, this sinful world and being the boss of your life, then you must give your heart and life to me. I can give you Life. I can say to you FOLLOW ME.

John Michael Montgomery sings “The Little Girl.”

Her parents never took the young girl to church
    Never spoke of His name
    Never read her His word
Two non-believers walking lost in this world
    Took their baby with them
    What a sad little girl

Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs
    Never wanted to play
    Or give kisses and hugs
She’d watch the TV and sit there on the couch
While her mom fell asleep And her daddy went out

And the drinking and the fighting
    just got worse every night
Behind their couch she’d be hiding
Oh what a sad little life

And like it always does, the bad just got worse
With every slap and every curse
Until her daddy in a drunk rage one night
Used a gun on her mom and then took his life

And some people from the city took the girl far away
To a new mom and a new dad
    kisses and hugs everyday

the-little-girl-held-by-jesusHer first day of Sunday school the teacher walked in
    And a small little girl
Stared at a picture of Him
She said I know that man up there on that cross
    I don’t know His name
But I know He got off

Cause He was there in my old house
and held me close to His side
As I hid there behind our couch
The night that my parents died

This little girl saw Jesus. She didn’t know better. He came to her in her need. One time His light shown upon your life. He came to you in your need. What has happened since?

Some of you have let your will, your life, your things, your world keep you from seeing Jesus. He is only a charm now. The cross is only something you wear around your neck. He is only a profession made years ago.

For you to see Jesus, you must die to everything that is yours, you must embrace the cross, you must carry the cross, You must feel the cross. By the cross of Christ, disobedience, rebellion, hurts, bitterness, the flesh is crucified, and Jesus is allowed to LIVE in your life. Jesus becomes real.
