I had a call this week from the daughter of a couple that lives near our church. Many of you would recognize her parents name. Seems her parents have been living together the last 20 years or so and never got married. Now they are thinking about making it legal and are looking into having a quaint church wedding. She said that because I was the priest they would want me to do the wedding. I corrected her of course, but I said that as Pastor I take marriage very seriously.

For Your Information I have four prerequisites that must be met before I will bless the marriage of a man and woman.

  1. The couple must believe that marriage is a Covenant Vow before God
  2. They must not be living together
  3. They must go through premarital counseling before I agree to marry them.
  4. They must have the blessings of both sets of parents.

We see the church out of focusSome of you are thinking, Brother Jim, that seems pretty harsh. After all, they have been living together and need to make it official. Plus they are our neighbors, and this is a chance to reach out to them. I understand your thoughts, but consider this: Do we ever have an excuse to take God for granted? NO! God is Holy, He is Righteous. He has standards and He reigns in Heaven whether we acknowledge Him or not. One day everyone will have an appointment with the God who created them and will answer for why they took Him for granted. If we can’t ever take God for granted, then we can’t take Jesus for granted. And if we can’t take Jesus for granted, we can’t take His wife for granted. And the church is His wife. Now when it comes to the church, the bride of Christ, we see a Universal application, but we also see a local application.

I believe Pleasant Prairie Baptist can be a great church. I believe we are sitting in a mission field. And we need to start taking our church more seriously. We can not take it for granted, just as we wouldn’t dare think of taking God for granted. I believe the community around Pleasant Prairie takes us for granted. They see us as a qaint little country church instead of seeing us as the powerful Bride of Jesus Christ. I think that is because we have failed to be a church, we have failed to be a bride, we have taken the Word of God for granted.There seems to be a couple problems in America:

  • We are extremely self-loving.
  • We dishonor the Word of God.

Because we love ourselves we tend to do what we want when we want it. Because we dishonor God’s Word, we dishonor God, we dishonor the church, we dishonor preachers, we dishonor pastors. When you dishonor God’s Word, you start to dishonor everything about God and what God says is important. We dishonor marriage, we dishonor the family, we dishonor our relationships with each other.

So for the next two weeks I want us to see from God’s Word Why Pleasant Prairie Baptist Church was put here on the corner of 215th & Y, and then I want to see from God’s Word what we should be doing so that we do not take God’s Word for granted. To do so we need to answer 2 Questions:

  • What Makes a Church?
  • What is Membership All About?

First, let’s look at Black’s Law Dictionary and see what our Courts say a church is.

A body or community of Christians, united under one form of government by the profession of one faith, and the observance of the same rituals and ceremonies. Black’s Law Dictionary 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th eds.

  • He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, THOU ART THE CHRIST, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, THAT THOU ART PETER Petros (stone), and upon this rock petra (Christ is the great foundation, the “chief corner-stone,”—Vincent’s) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 1. Jesus says the church is something He is Building.

  • Jesus is the Architect, the owner, the developer, the reason there is a church.

2. Jesus says His church has Great Power.

  • Stronger than Hell, Able to Bring Heaven down to Earth

3. Jesus says His Church is built upon Stones that all Declare the same Message.

  • Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. The Church is all about Jesus and His Living in us, empowering us to reach out to those who are without Jesus.

1. The Church is a Living Building of “Called out Ones”

Jesus says “I will build my church”

  • Church Universal
  • Church Local

Church made of Living StonesChrist appears here, not as the foundation, but as the architect: “On this rock will I build.” The church is a collection of pieces of living rocks that when combined by the power of God are impenetrable. Peter was the first, just as Abraham was the first.

A. Jesus Selects Living Materials:

  • John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
  • John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
  • What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19

  • To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:4-5
  • And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Corinthians 6:16

The church is to be like the altar of stones upon which the Jews sacrificed to Holy God.

  • Exodus 20:24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

C. Jesus Uses Special Stones to Build the Church

  • And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: Ephesians 4:11-1

2. The Church is the Power of Christ to an Enslaved World

We have the AUTHORITY & POWER of our King.

  • King Jesus Will ReignMatthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
  • Ephesians 1:22-23 And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the head over all [things] to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:25 That there should be no schism in the body; but [that] the members should have the same care one for another.

We follow an unseen King, and obey His commands. That obedience keeps us in His Kingdom and not in the devil’s. As long as we obey our King, we have our King’s Authority in this world.

reconciliationWe are ON MISSION to be Ambassadors to the World

Since Jesus is reigning in an undisclosed location, and since He is still seeking more living stones to keep building His church, He needs you and me to be Ambassadors to this enslaved world.

  • Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 jesus pierced cross

We are always on mission. This world is always watching the King’s people. We are to go into all this world and hold up the Good News of Jesus Christ. But we are not to merely say it, we are to show it!

3. The Church consists of Believers in a Covenant Relation with Jesus Christ.

  • We Have a Responsibility to Each Other because We are in Christ.

We are not a collection of lonely islands. No we are a collection of stones that are made into a huge rocky peak, by the power of God through our Belief and Confession of this Blood Covenant.

  • From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4:16

I can’t see it, I can’t even feel it sometimes, but there is a bond that is stronger than anything else I’ve ever faced. That bond is my marriage with my wife. That bond may be just a piece of paper filed in the Jackson County Courthouse. But it is a bond designed by God to be so tough, that if you ever break it, it will mess your life up and leave scars that only Jesus can heal.

God_cuts_covenant-abrahamWhen you come to Jesus because His Holy Spirit has convicted you of your sin, and has spoken into the wee small crevices of your heart, a bond was forged between you and God. God says that bond will never be broken because He places the seal of His Holy Spirit within your life. You may not feel it, you may not sense it, but GOD LIVES IN YOU! And if you turn away from God, you neglect His word, it will mess you up! If it doesn’t mess you up to ignore Jesus Christ and neglect Him, there never was that bond.

It’s like marriage, you know it when you neglect it and turn away from it.

Now because of this Bond we have with God through Jesus Christ, we have a responsibility to love and pray and support others who have entered into this relationship with Jesus. The easiest way to take care of one another is through a local Bible Believing, Bible Preaching Church. The local church is built by Jesus on the Power of our Communion with Him through our Covenant Confession with Him.communion-WITH-JESUS-HANDS

I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 1 Corinthians 10:15-17

My wife and I have experienced the Power of our Covenant Relationship in Joining in the care of our Children and now our grandchildren. We have begun our own body of Tompkins, and I pray that we will all be built upon Jesus Christ.

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. 1 Corinthians 12:12-26

  • We Have a Responsibility to Build Strong Marriages and Families because they Reflect the Power of Christ to the World.

The Church is the Bride of Christ:

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. Ephesians 5:21-33

The Church (those written in the Book of Life) is the Bride of Christ

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Revelation 21:9-27

We See that as far as God and His Plans are concerned, the Church is central, it is key.

So Why is it important to Join a Church? When we are born again we become members of the church universal, we are baptized into one Body. Why do we need to join a Local Church?

How Important is Church Membership?

The leadership of Pleasant Prairie Baptist Church considers membership to be important from a polity and relational perspective.

  • Polity: only members are allowed to have a say in the direction of our church by voicing their concerns and by voting.
  • Relational: Membership enjoins us to certain responsibilities and obligations as detailed in our church covennt.

We believe church membership is very important for our Spiritual Well-Being, as the following illustrates:

Five Proofs of the Mandate for Membership in a Local Church

Each of these proofs reveal that lack of membership would minimize or deny our spiritual growth in Christ.

1) The Metaphor of the Body

Church membership is implied in the metaphor of the body in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. The original meaning of the word ‘member’ is member of a body, like hand and foot and eye and ear. That’s the imagery behind the word ‘member’ in the text. Verse 12: “Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”

So the question this imagery raises for the local church that Paul is describing in 1 Corinthians 12 is: Who intends to be treated as a hand or foot or eye or ear of this body? There is a unity and organic relationship implied in the imagery of the body. There is something unnatural about a Christian attaching himself to a body of believers and not being a member of the body.

2) Christians Required to Submit to Their Leaders

Church membership is implied in the biblical requirement of Christians to be submitted to a group of church leaders, elders, or pastors. The point here is that without membership, who is it that the New Testament is referring to who must submit to a specific group of leaders? Some kind of expressed willingness or covenant or agreement or commitment (that is, membership) has to precede a person’s submission to a group of leaders.

Consider the way the New Testament talks about the relationship of the church to her leaders.

  • Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. (Hebrews 13:17)
  • We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13)
  • Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. (1 Timothy 5:17)

How is this leadership and this submission going to work if there is no membership defining who has made the commitment to be led and who has been chosen as leaders? If we downplay the importance of membership, it is difficult to see how we could take these commands to submit and to lead seriously and practically.

3) Shepherds Required to Care for Their Flock

shepherds care for the flockChurch membership is implied in the way the New Testament requires elders to care for the flock in their charge. Of course elders can extend their love to anyone and everyone, and should, within the limits of their ability. But the question is whether the Bible tells elders that they are to have a special responsibility and care for a certain group—a group of members. Consider Acts 20:28 where Paul tells the elders how to care for their flock.

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. Acts 20:8

This verse does not say elders cannot visit unbelievers or those who are not yet members. But it does make clear that their first responsibility is to a particular flock. How are they to know who their flock is? Who are we as elders and pastors responsible for? For whom will we give an account to God?

The way Peter speaks to the elders in 1 Peter 5 is even more clear on this point. Verses 2-3: “Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.”

“Those in your charge” (your portion, your lot) implies that the elders knew whom they were responsible for. This is just another way of talking about membership. If a person does not want to be held accountable by a group of church leaders or be the special focus of the care of a group of church leaders, they will resist the idea of membership. And they will resist God’s appointed way for them to live and be sustained in their faith.

4) The Church Is to Discipline Its Members

Church membership is implied by the way the church is supposed to discipline its members. Consider the implication of Matthew 18:15-17 where “the church” (ekklesia) appears to be the final court of appeal in matters of church authority as it relates to membership.

If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

If there is no church membership, how can you define the group that will take up this sensitive and weighty matter of exhorting the unrepentant person and finally rendering a judgment about his standing in the community? It’s hard to believe that just anyone who showed up claiming to be a Christian could be a part of that gathering. Surely, “the church” must be a definable group to handle such a weighty matter. You know who you mean when you “take it to the church.”

5) Excommunication Exists

Church membership is implied by the simple fact that excommunication even exists. Paul implies this in 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 where he deals with the necessity of putting someone out of the church. He says, “What have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. ‘Purge the evil person from among you.’”

There are two implications here: One is that there is an “in the church” group and an “outside the church” group. Being in the church is definable. The other implication is that a person can be removed from being “in the church.” Such a formal removal would not be possible if there were no such thing as a clear membership—who is an accountable part of this body, and who is not?

Expectation for All Believers

So for these five reasons and more we believe that membership is a New Testament expectation for all believers. Each of us should be a member of a local body of believers.

  • We should take responsibility to discipline those of the body who do not repent from public sin that brings reproach on the name of Christ.

  • We should declare ourselves part of the body so that if we are wayward, we ourselves would be liable to such exclusion.

  • We should take our position under the leadership and authority of our church leaders.

  • And we should find our place in the organic whole as a body part—a member—of a local body of Christ.

That is God’s plan for us and for Pleasant Prairie Baptist Church. That is what we mean by membership. All of those aspects of membership are rooted in the truth that the local church is an expression of the universal church. Part of what it means to belong to the body of Christ is to belong to a local body.

A Blood-Bought Gift of God’s Grace

Church bought through the crucifixionThe New Testament tells of no Christians who are not accountable members of local churches in the sense that we have just seen. “Lone-Ranger Christians” are a contradiction because becoming a Christian means being united to Christ, and union with Christ expresses itself in union with a local body of believers. It seems to us that in the New Testament, to be excluded from the local church was to be excluded from Christ. This is why the issue of membership is so important.

Are you an accountable member of a local church? Not just: Is your name somewhere? But, are you committed to discipline and being disciplined according to biblical standards? Have you publicly declared your willingness to be shepherded and to be led by the leaders of a local church? Do you see yourself and your gifts as part of an organic ministering body? Do you show by your firm attachment to Christ’s body that you are attached to Christ?

Church membership is a blood-bought gift of God’s grace. More than most of us realize, it is a life-sustaining, faith-strengthening, joy-preserving means of God’s mercy to us. We urge you not to deprive yourself of this blessing.

Jim and Clare TompkinsWhen I was about seven years old, my mom went away for a while. I did not know what was going on, but I found out later that there was problems between my mom and dad. Dad was a traveling salesman, gone 4 and 5 days a week, and Mom was raising three rambunctious boys. I think something serious happened, because Mom went away to Texas to live in a Psychiatric Hospital. She had a nervous breakdown. She went through electro-shock therapy. I had to go live with a strange family for a while because my Dad still travelled. My Mom and Dad almost didn’t make it. Somehow, Mom came back home and started dragging us to the Prairie Baptist Church down the street. She started making friendships with good caring friends. A couple men started visiting my dad. Glenn and Merl faithfully called on my dad, and didn’t judge him when he smoked and drank in front of them. They just kept inviting him to church. Finally he went, and went and went. Something different was going on in my family. Mom and Dad weren’t fighting like before. Before I knew it, Mom and Dad joined the church. Dad started taking a leadership role. He was different! It was that church and Jesus Christ that made a difference in our family, and the same has continued to make a difference in my family and now my kid’s families.


The church is Vital and Powerful and is used by Jesus Christ to transform sinners into the children of God!


Boomerang ExpressIt All Comes Back to Jesus! This is the catchphrase for Lifeway’s Boomerang Express Vacation Bible School. We are in the middle of Bible School this week. I decided to give our adults a whirlwind presentation of Bible School in 37 minutes last Sunday. The children are learning about Peter, my favorite New Testament preacher. Peter I can identify with, becasue he was 100% human, yet 100% sold out for his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Each night the children look at a significant event in Peter’s life, and how it impacted his love for Jesus Christ. The nights are themed as follows:

1. Follow Him

Bible Story: Peter’s Invitation  John 1:40-42

Peter Decides to Follow JesusBecoming a born again Christian requires a decision. It is not left up to chance, or your works or even hope. You consciously decide by FAITH to see Jesus as your Lord and Savior. When you make that decision it is as significant as saying “I DO” at the wedding altar. Do you remember the song titled “I Met the Master”? by Dottie West

When you meet the Master, and your eyes are opened to His Deity, His Sacrifice His Resurrection, YOU KNOW IT!

Life Application: Because Jesus loves and chooses me, I can follow Him.

Peter Discovers Jesus is the Son of God2. Worship Him

Bible Story: Peter’s Discovery  Matthew 14:22-33

In this event Peter discovered what it means to worship Jesus. When Jesus saved his life, it brought a totally new perspective to his view of Jesus. And when the other disciples saw just a glimpse of who Jesus really was, they changed from seeing a ghost to seeing the “Son of God”

Life Application: Because Jesus is the Son of God, I can worship Him.

Peter Denies knowing Jesus3. Confess Him

Bible Story: Peter’s Challenge Luke 22:31-34 Luke 22:54-62 Luke 23:44-46  Luke 24:1-12

Even though Peter knew Jesus was the Son of God, it took the sight of the empty tomb to wake him up to the unbelievable truth that Jesus truly is the Son of God. Until we see Jesus as He truly is, we are not able to confess Him as our Savior and Lord.

Life Application: Because Jesus died for me, I can confess Him as my Savior.

Feed My Sheep Peter4. Serve Him

Bible Story: Peter’s Mission John 21:1-19

Even though Peter failed Jesus at His greatest hour of need, Jesus forgave Peter. But Jese did not allow Peter to continue to sulk and live with a defeatist circle of regret. He urged Peter to focus on what Jesus called him to do – Feed my sheep!

Life Application: Because Jesus forgives me, I can still serve Him.

Even though the danger of death and martyrdom was facing Peter and the disciples, they continued to be faithful to Jesus. They continued to OBEY!

Life Application: Because Jesus helps me, I can follow God’s plan for me.

JESUS IS THE ROCK

Jesus is the RockThere is a famous rock in Australia. Some call it Ayers, others Uluru. Uluru is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural icons. The world-renowned sandstone formation stands 348 m (1,142 ft) high (863 m/2,831 ft above sea level) with most of its bulk below the ground, and measures 9.4 km (5.8 mi) in circumference.

Uluru is notable for appearing to change color as the different light strikes it at different times of the day and year, with sunset a particularly remarkable sight when it briefly glows red.

Jesus and the Bloodwood treeAt the base of ULURU is an abundance of Bloodwood Trees. The Aborigines use the wood of the Centralian Bloodwood for spearheads and boomerangs.

The tree trunk and branches are thorned and become more gnarled with age, lending to it’s attractive appearance. The wood of the tree is heavy and extremely hard and dense. Freshly cut wood will readily sink in water. The sap of the Bloodwood tree is a deep red. The natives use it as a disinfectant.Campeche is a valuable dyewood, it is said to be ready for felling when about 8 years old. The wood, deprived of its bark and sap-wood, is sent the market in the form of large blocks and billets. The wood can dry out, yet still retain its potency. Both hematoxylin and hematein are still commonly used for bacteriological and histological stains. Bloodwood also has other interesting uses. In herbal medicine systems it is employed as a natural remedy for anemia, dysentery and diarrhea, intestinal parasites, tuberculosis, and for menstrual disorders. The bark is used internally for diarrhea, and dysentery; externally as an astringent disinfectant for wounds and skin ulcers.

God loves you! You are separated from God because of your sin. The wages of your sin is death and eternal separation in Hell from Holy God. God’s Love required that a way might be found, a way to redeem sinful man from this sin penalty, and at the same time, satisfy the righteous requirements of Holy God’s Law. God’s Love REQUIRED the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ, God’s only Son. Jesus Christ is the REASON that we know God loves us, wants to have a living relationship with us. Jesus Christ, and Him living in our lives is the RESULT when you come to Him as Savior. If you Confess Jesus Christ as your own savior and Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead- you shall be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Rom 10:9,10)

Is Jesus Christ YOUR Rock? Have you been born again? Does Jesus live in you? Do you KNOW without a doubt that you will spend eternity with God?

Kansas University is sticking it to the little guy again. KU has filed a flurry of new actions against Larry Sinks and Joe-College T-Shirts. They are seeking contempt orders because of Sinks failure to follow a court ruling against trademark infringement. Basically Joe-College is not authorized to use the Name of Kansas University or any of its protected Names or Slogans.

How important is “Authority to use a Name?”

If you are a close friend of Barack Obama, and he has authorized you to use his name, you will have great authority. Why else would his friends be scheming together to hold on to that relationship and that authority? (Read: Obama’s Friends Form Strategy to Stay Close).obama-friends

Nearly 2,000 years ago people really understood the Authority of Names. There was no instant access via cell phones or emails. Men in authority always used delegates or representatives or even messengers authorized to use the Authority of their Name. Apostles Peter and John were authorized to use the Name of Jesus Christ. At the Beautiful Gate they told a lame man “In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk” (Acts 3:6). Based upon that authority, the man immediately stood up and began walking and leaping and praising God!

The name of Barack Obama will have great command in the coming years. And those authorized to use his name will share in that command. Yet Barack’s name is nothing when compared to the Name of Jesus Christ. The world seeks to dishonor the Name of Jesus, but God always honors the Name of His Son. Believers in Christ must realize that we, if Christ truly lives in us, are authorized to use the Name of Jesus. God looks upon His Son in the glory of heaven, not at us here on the earth, and He honors his Son’s Name. All that took place the day Peter told the lame man to walk resulted from the impact and power of the Name of Jesus on the situation.

The only thing which distinguished Peter and John from any other citizen of Judea was that they were authorized to use that Name! The Holy Spirit had filled them and empowered them to use His Name. The Holy Spirit transformed these uneducated fishermen into Spiritual Giants, not because of who they were, but because of who they knew! Believer, have you surrendered the authority of your life to the authority of the Holy Spirit? When you walk in the Holy Spirit you are authorized to use the most powerful name in the universe. God only recognizes the Power of the Name of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the one who is worthy of honor and glory. Are you authorized to use the Name of Jesus Christ? Don’t let situations and circumstances overwhelm you. Use the Authority you have been given! Use the Name of Jesus Christ!


About Second John

FIRST, John was concerned for Cyria, that her hospitality was in danger of becoming the unwitting cause of blessing and endorsement for the message of these pretenders.

SECOND, He was concerned that she would lose all that she had accomplished for the Lord, and her reward would be diminished.

I ask the question: How do we learn to walk in the truth. How do we learn to follow God’s prescriptions for our life? How do we keep our reward from being diminished?

1. The easy answer is through prayer and reading God’s word.

2. But the key is seen in Hebrews 4:12

Hebrews 4:12 (12) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

We will not learn to walk in the truth, to follow God’s Prescriptives for Living;

We will continue to walk a course of compromise; we will continue to be swayed by false teachers, unless we learn to become mighty in Spirit! God’s impact upon our lives is Spiritually discerned. God is Spirit and they that worship Him must worship in Spirit and Truth. We must learn to be impacted by the Spirit of God!

First, We need to let God’s word divide our soul from our spirit.

What does that mean. It means that we read the Bible not with our mind, but with our spirit. The Word of God will reveal to our spirit what He wants, without the influences of our corrupted soul. The soul is where the influence of the pride of life, lust of the flesh and lust of the eyes have their influence. The soul is the seat of our mind, our will and our emotions. God desires that these be under the influence of His Holy Spirit.

But too often our spirit is on a starvation diet from God’s Word, and there is nothing to influence our soul. We let the world have full sway over our thoughts, will and emotions. God’s Word is quick and powerful, and can divide the soul from our spirit, that we might become mighty in Spirit.

But there is a secret to doing so. There is a secret revealed by Peter that reveals the way we can abide in the truth and become mighty in Spirit.

We must allow God’ Power and Presence to IMPACT our lives.

2 Peter 1:12-19 KJV (12) Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. (13) Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; (14) Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. (15) Moreover I will endeavor that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. (16) For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming (presence) of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. (17) For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (18) And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. (19) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Peter indicates in verse 14 that it is almost time for him to die. But before he goes, he wants his readers to always remember something. Verse 16 Peter reminds them that they do not follow cunningly devised stories, but the truth as witnessed by Peter himself. He wants them to learn of the power and the coming of Jesus Christ. The coming could be better translated presencing, because it refers to physical presence.

We must learn the POWER and the PRESENCING of the Lord, both of which Peter learned when he became an eyewitness of the majesty of Jesus Christ.

We must learn to be impacted with the Power of Christ which is above all, and to be impacted by the presence of Christ, which is in the life of every believer.

Now I wish we could each have been with Peter and James and John and seen Christ transfigured into his Heavenly Glory and Majesty, but we are 2000 years too late. But there is a way you can see His power and David shows us how.

To Learn the Power of God, of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must learn to do something that David learned.

1. David found himself in the darkest of moments, the lowest of low, when he had to flee from the wrath of King Saul. As he hid in a cold dank dark cave, with his back to the wall and no way out, with all of Saul’s troops outside sworn to kill him on sight, with all the authority of King Saul, David did something that you or I would have never thought to do.

2. David, trained by the Holy Spirit, put God between him and the soldiers.

3. David looked up out of the darkness of his life, his situation, and saw God exalted, and glorified.

4. David did not cry out to God to honor his promise to make him King, to vanquish these soldiers under his feet, to make him the King. God could have done that, but O what a price it would have cost David. All those lessons that God wanted David to go through, all the character that God wanted to build in David, would have been lost.

5. David was fixed on God’s Glory, God’s Majesty. He was saying, O God, do unto me as you please, but whatever you do, May it be for your glory. David had been trained by the Spirit f God. David had learned to divide his soul and what his mind will and emotions wanted, and to see with His spirit what God wanted.

Whenever we have a severe overwhelming problem, a financial pressure, a sickness, a mechanical problem, a problem with work, (if we don’t try to do it our self) we run to God and say God please, please, please help me. But are we willing to lay aside what we want, what we think we need and say O God, you be exalted in this!

6. David placed God between himself and his circumstances. David was touched by and beheld the glory of God. His Heart was fixed on the glory of God.

a. Was it up to David to exalt God? Was it David who gave glory to God? No! No! No!

b. God is already exalted. God is already in Glory!

Isaiah 40:25-28 NASB “To whom then will you liken Me That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One. (26) Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing. (27) Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”? (28) Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.

The problem with Christians in John’s day and in our day as well, is that when it comes to making a choice, we don’t put God’s glory first and above all.

The ones who were a danger to Cyria (I John 2) and her household had come out of the church. They may have been friends. But somehow, some way, the message of Christ had become corrupted in their thinking and in their lives.

The truth is, we all walk a treacherous road, we all face temptations, troubling circumstances, that can affect the way we view things. A young person may start out as a believer, believing in the word of God, in the reality of Jeus Christ. However, that person is confronted with choices as they grow older.

Choices as to Money, Ambition, Career, Pleasures, Certain Behaviors, Dating, Physical Activities, Music, Marriage are made. When we make those choices with no vision of God’s glory in mind, our behavior is impacted. And when our behavior changes, our Morality changes and we have to re-think our theology.

To justify our choice, our behavior, our view of God, God’s word, Jesus Christ is impacted, weakened, watered down and changed.

Who do you think wins when we choose between God and Money? God and Ambition? God and Comfort? God and Career? God and Dating? God and Marriage?

The people John is warning Cyria (In 2 John) about have made their choice, and it was not with God in view. They chose comfort, pleasure, fame, standing and now are out to gather believers to their cause.

Wrong choices are never isolated. They always affect others.

· A choice to light a simple firecracker or pyrotechnic display can result in the injury or even death to others.

· The choice to pursue a career to the neglect of your children effects your heritage.

· The choice to seek personal pleasure will affect your marriage and your love for God as well as your service.

· The choice to love and seek after money will be seen by your loved ones.

· Your choice to put business before faithfulness to God’s church God’s word will result in your children and even neighbors excusing the same attitude in themselves.

After such a change in your thinking, after the continual neglect of God, is it any wonder when a Earth-shattering crisis comes into your life, you look up hoping to find God and you wonder why He doesn’t seem to care.

You never wanted to see His glory in any other circumstance, why should he think you want to see it now? He is not your little lucky charm that you can wave whenever you need it. He is not a genie in a bible sitting on your cofe table that you rub whenever things get really hard.

God wants you to see Him exalted, glorified over every aspect of your life. God is God over all or he is God of Nothing at ALL. God declares that He is a Jealous God, and if we make friends with the world, we will become his enemy.

That is why John warned Cyria not to lose that which she had worked so hard for. When we lose sight of God’s majesty over our daily life, we have lost God’s prescence within us.

But more than seeing God exalted in Power, we need to be impacted by His Presence.

The Transfiguration was not only something BEFORE THE EYES of Peter, it was something that happened TO him, and afterward came INTO him. True, there was the event, the happening, in time, at a certain place.

But that Vision of the Lord’s Power and Majesty was not enough to keep Peter from denying Jesus and running away from the cross. Just as the Hebrews in the wilderness a mere three days after seeing the mightiest working of God returned to their complaining and ungrateful ways.

But, to bring that vision home, something happened IN Peter.

It took the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit to make Christ live within him to transform him into the Priest of the new church.

Paul was stricken on the Damascus road by a heavenly vision of the risen and exalted all powerful Jesus Christ. While we cannot deny the impact of that vision upon the Apostle Paul, that is not what kept him preaching and serving after shipwrecks, stonings, imprisonments.

Paul’s life and living was impacted by the Presencing of Christ within him. “IT pleased God… to reveal His Son IN me” (Galatians 1:15-16). Christ was not only a vision TO him; He was IN him.

The Apostle Paul’s whole life and ministry was based upon and sprang out of that double event, TO and IN.

As the Majesty of the Lord Jesus became an INWARD thing with him, It became a mighty IMPACT upon his life.

Paul declared in Galatians 2:20 KJV “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

It is one thing to be impacted with the Power of God.

David was impacted with the Power of God, but just a vision of Him lifted up could not sustain his faith for the 17 year he was on the run.

When David was forced out of the Philistine army, he and his men returned to Ziklag, only to see all their homes burning and the wives and children taken away. His men cried out in anguish, then took up rocks to throw at David, to kill him.

The Bible doesn’t say that David looked up to see the power of God. NO, that is not what took David through the lowest point in his life. Yes this was lower than when he hid in the cave from Saul.

1Sa 30:6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

David did not look outside of himself to see a powerful God. David looked within himself because he knew the reality of God’s Presence. He immediately encourage himself with this truth and then inquired of God!

How is your life impacted by God?

WE NEED TO SEE the King in His glory; WE NEED TO catch a fresh glimpse of the glorified Lord. There will never be an impact until we have seen Him as the glorified Lord. He is the answer to every need, and a vision of Him as exalted and attested by Heaven will bring new impact into our lives, into our ministries, into our churches, upon situations. Does not your heart cry, as mine does, “Oh for a recovery of the Church’s impact upon this world!”

We NEED THE IMPACT OF the majesty of the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Will you desire to abide in the truth, Will you desire a reward of the Lord, Will you desire your children to walk in the truth? We must continually be on guard to bring the majesty of the Lord into every situation of our lives; We must allow Him to put His power upon it. Do you not agree with me that that secret is what we need? And for that, I repeat, we need a new, mighty mastery, in our inner being, of the greatness of the Lord Jesus. We all agree that He is great; we sing ‘How great Thou art!’; we will not reserve or trim our words about the Lord Jesus in glory: but there is a gap between his Glory and our situations. That is the tragedy and that is the problem and the perplexity of it. HE is like THAT, and yet THIS is like THIS, and the two things are not brought together.

Now, we need more than words, to get us through. Our Christian lives ought to be based upon something like this: ‘I have seen the Lord’. By the operation and activity of the Holy Spirit sent down from Heaven we must have an inward vision of the Exalted Lord. Life that has to go on without that is just a drag; it is an existence. Work or service without that INWARD VISION has nothing in it to lift us, to carry us on.

The choice is yours: As 2 John verse 2 says, You can abide in the truth, you can exalt God over your life and over every situation you encounter, you can focus on Christ within you, allowing Him to abide in you,

Or you can do like verse 7… And go your own way, and make choices that lead you away from the vision of God, cloaking the inner Christ within you.

Then one day you will look for the presence of God in your life, and you will find yourself alone. You will look for the presence of God in the life of your children, and you will find they have become just like you, living their own way, in the absence of God.

We need a fresh, living vision of Power of Christ, Him who is exalted, at the right hand of God, ever living to make intercession for us, ever waiting to come and judge the world.

We need to learn the secret of placing Jesus between us and our problems, to learn that He is alive and living within us, abiding in us, desiring to live through us. He has not left us alone, but has applied all power to every need of our life.
